Welcome to the WPIAL girls soccer semifinal live blog.
We had a team of contributors out at both Canon McMillan and Moon to cover four of the eight matches.
Ed Rosensteel was at Canon-Mac, covering the double header that included Shady Side Academy beating Bentworth, 5-1 to reach the 1A final yet again, plus top-ranked Mars getting just enough to beat a pesky Belle Vernon, 2-0 in the later match.
UPDATE: Here’s Ed’s recap from SSA’s 5-1 win vs Bentworth (1A)
Second half surge fueled by Davis’ hat trick lifts Shady Side to another WPIAL finals appearance
UPDATE: Recap from Mars-Belle Vernon:
Our newest contributor, Matt Popchock, was at Moon, where he covered the doubleheader there.
In the 2A showdown between North Catholic and defending WPIAL champions, South Park, the Trojans dominated — winning 4-0.
In the nightcap Peters Township and North Allegheny battle to a full 110 minutes to end in 1-1 draw — with NA winning on penalty kicks (4-2) in the 4A showdown.
David Hague was back helping us tonight with photos from both matches at Moon.
Below are all of the results from Monday.
WPIAL GIRLS SEMIFINAL RESULTS
FINAL: Norwin 1, Seneca Valley 0
FINAL: North Allegheny 1, Peters Twp 1 2OT – NA WINS 4-2 IN PK’s!
It will be fourth time in five years Norwin will play for the title at Highmark Stadium — as they’ll take on North Allegheny on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
NA defeated Peters Township in a penalty kick shootout after the match ended deadlocked, 1-1. Defending champion SV are done at 13-4-2 and last year’s runner-up, Peters season is over too. There is no PIAA play-in game for WPIAL girls teams in 4A.
FINAL Mars 2, Belle Vernon 0
FINAL: Plum 1, West Allegheny 0
It will be a 1v2 seed showdown in girls 3A.
Despite Belle Vernon’s GK Grace Henderson standing tall and with double digit saves, Mars converted on a couple chances in a match they dominated. Pitt commit Ellie Coffield caught Henderson leaning the wrong way with seven minutes left in the first half. Goal assisted by Taylor Hamlett. The Fighting Planets doubled its lead when Hamlett was on the receiving end of corner from Anna Kurpakus.
In a tight, hard-fought contest with less than 5 minutes left Plum’s Marissa Liberto was in the right place at the right time to pounce on a loose ball in the box, and drive it into back of the net. From there, Plum held on to the 1-0 lead.
FINAL Yough 3, Freeport 0
FINAL North Catholic 4, South Park 0
This is the first time Yough and North Catholic will be each playing in a WPIAL final. Yough scored on its first shot of the game in the second minute, as Justine Appolonia went coast-to-coast, crossed it to McKenzie Pritts, who finished with a one-time shot into the back of the net. Natalie Vilcheck drilled a shot from 25 yards early in the second half to give Yough the two-goal lead. The Cougars would add another one — again from the combination of Appolona and Pritts in the 64th minute. Pritts now has 25 goals this season.
FINAL: Shady Side Academy 5, Bentworth 1
FINAL: Greensburg Central Catholic 4, Freedom 3, OT
Shady Side will meet Greensburg Central in the 1A final for sixth time this decade, and for the ninth time in the past 10 years of WPIAL Girls 1A soccer, one of these two schools will be champions. GCC has won five WPIAL titles in this span, while SSA has won three. Last year was the exception, when Freedom beat Bentworth in the final.
A few pictures from North Catholic’s win from David Hague. We’ll have more in Matt Popchock’s game recap.
