PIAA Releases Enrollment Numbers for WPIAL Boys Soccer

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) released new enrollment numbers for high schools in the state on Tuesday, which will impact where WPIAL boys and girls soccer teams play the next two seasons.

The PIAA report was sorted by district.

Pittsburgh Soccer Now has taken this list one step further, providing a stand-alone list of WPIAL schools by designated soccer classification. The numbers revealed where WPIAL teams will be initially designated to play soccer from 4A through 1A for the 2024 and 2025 seasons.    However, these reports do not include competition formula or voluntary upgrades, which a number of programs elected to do during the 2022-23 classification period and will likely expect to see again in 2024-25.

We’ve also noted if schools competed in a different classification in the most recent competition period (2022-23) and have included the enrollment numbers of the largest and smallest schools by each designated classification.  Pittsburgh Public Schools (considered PIAA District 8) are included at the bottom.

The next step in this process, the WPIAL will formally reveal the Classifications and Section realignment for boys and girls soccer in 2024-25.  Some schools, especially those who dropped down in classification, may elect to stay up for sake of maintaining neighboring rivals/traditional sections. In the previous cycle, Peters Township elected to stay up in Class 4A, even when their enrollment numbers dipped.  However, in this upcoming cycle, Peters’ are designated to compete in Class 4A.

The current number of schools breakdown by classification is 4A (18), 3A (30), 2A (32), 1A (24)

Among the schools that will be moving in classifications include:

4A:  Plum, Connellsville, Penn Hills and Gateway will be designated to move up (Woodland Hills — competed in 2A in 2022-23, so their status for 2024-25 is uncertain)

3A: Belle Vernon Area, Washington, Knoch, Avonworth and West Mifflin will be designated to move up; Alderdice will be designated to move down to 3A from 4A.

2A: Central Valley will be designated to drop down; Burrell, Charleroi and Seton LaSalle are designated to move up

1A: no schools have dropped down from 2A

To reiterate, PIAA lists released Tuesday are not finalized. Teams can voluntarily “play up” into a higher classification. The play-up deadline is Friday.  The lists also do not include moves forced by the PIAA competitive-balance rule. Those will be determined later. For the previous cycle (2022-23), the soccer realignment announcement came in January 2022.
