• Statement Opportunity: The Hounds look to bounce back on short rest after their 3-0-1 August run was snapped by Wednesday’s stoppage-time 2-1 defeat in El Paso.

• Fortress F.N.B.: History favors Pittsburgh at home—the Rowdies have won only once in 10 previous trips to Highmark/F.N.B. Stadium (5 Hounds wins, 4 draws).  In addition, the Hounds have scored wins against the other top Eastern Conference sides already this season at F.N.B — beating Detroit, Louisville and Charleston.  Can they complete the home sweep of the top teams?  

• Squad Depth Boost: Beto Ydrach made his return Wednesday from a hernia injury suffered March 28. Meanwhile, Lasse Kelp and Nico Campuzano were rested in El Paso, giving Rob Vincent fresh options against the league leaders.

• The Ex-Hounds Connection: Tampa Bay’s roster features FIVE (!!!) former Pittsburgh players—Nate Dossantos, Russell Cicerone (6 goals), Louis Pérez (4 goals), Jahmali Waite, and Austin Pack. They complement top scorer MD Myers (9 goals) and playmaker Charlie Ostrem (7 assists).

• Stadium Logistics: Note the unique 5:00 PM start time! The Tailgate Zone will be closed prior to the match due to the F.N.B. Stadium Touch-a-Truck event (2:00–4:00 PM).

Managerial Perspectives: Rob Vincent on El Paso and the Road Ahead

Reflecting on Wednesday night’s dramatic 2-1 defeat in West Texas, head coach Rob Vincent pointed to the razor-thin margins that ultimately swung the match in stoppage time. Discussing how rapidly the momentum shifted after Robbie Mertz put Pittsburgh ahead in the 53rd minute, Vincent acknowledged the frustration of giving up the lead so quickly:

“Obviously on one hand, you don’t like to concede so quickly. You would like to get through the next 5-10 minutes ahead and be able to make your changes for the last 25 minutes to see the match out.”

However, Vincent emphasized that Eric Calvillo’s 57th-minute equalizer was a moment of sheer bad luck rather than a defensive breakdown:

“On the other hand, I don’t think it was a breakdown on our part, so it’s not really something you can try to correct. It was just a bit of misfortune on our part; he hits a shot from distance, and it takes a wicked deflection into the net. That’s not one you can really place blame on.”

Though both sides battled for a late winner before El Paso ultimately converted a header in the third minute of stoppage time, Vincent’s mindset immediately turned to Saturday afternoon’s marquee matchup at home:

“I thought we settled back in after they tied it, and both teams had their chances near the end, but they were able to find a late winner. It’s a tough one to take, but we have to be ready to get after it against Tampa on Saturday.”

Beyond the result, the quick turnaround in West Texas offered critical opportunities to test squad depth and build match fitness for key contributors down the stretch—a focus area Vincent highlighted given the team’s ongoing battle with injuries.

“I think that probably the most important thing is that guys can remain ready for when their time comes, particularly down the stretch. We’re still dealing with a couple of injuries, and guys need to be ready.”

The match saw goalkeeper Mike Sheridan make his first league start of the campaign and deliver several pivotal first-half saves, while center back Beto Ydrach returned to action for the first time since March. Getting Jorge Garcia and Guillaume Vacter valuable minutes was another bright spot.

“I was happy for Mike to get a league start, and he made a couple of good saves. You really can’t fault him on the goals. Getting Jorge some minutes, keeping him close to the field was good. It’s just having guys being ready to step up when it’s their time.”

The evening also marked a historic individual milestone for veteran midfielder Robbie Mertz, who became just the third player in club history to reach 200 appearances for the Riverhounds. Mertz celebrated the milestone by scoring a brilliant 53rd-minute goal to cap off a six-man passing sequence, tying him for 10th on the club’s all-time scoring list. Vincent spoke proudly of Mertz’s legacy and influence within the organization:

“Certainly from my perspective this year, Robbie’s been a massive part of what we try to do as a staff and group, and he has a big influence with the guys. His service to the club these last few years… 200 is a milestone not many players reach with one club.”

The squad took time before kickoff to honor the Upper St. Clair native for his dedication to his hometown team.

“We talked about it with the guys before the match. Robbie’s put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the club, and it was great to see him get the goal, unfortunately we couldn’t quite get the result.”
