When Rob Vincent first sat down to take questions after the Riverhounds suffered another tough defeat to close out July—a 1-0 setback to FC Tulsa in a USL Championship final rematch—the first question asked in his press conference was about his squad’s lack of consistency this season. At that point, the loss dropped the team below .500 in league play, capping off a month where Pittsburgh dropped four of five league matches — two of those against expansion squads and three a home but the one win came in commanding fashion, 3-1, on National Televised broadcast against top flight Louisville City FC.

Before the question was even fully out, Vincent was already nodding his head, acknowledging the root of his team’s biggest issue this season: finding consistency on both sides of the ball, developing a stronger identity as a team that can dictate matches, and sustaining quality play into the final third for longer stretches.

As Sacramento Republic FC comes to town, the challenge shifts back to whether Pittsburgh can string together back-to-back complete performances—something this squad hasn’t done since winning consecutive matches over Detroit and Greenville way back at the end of April.
