Entering Saturday, the Hounds had never beaten Louisville in Pittsburgh.
That history didn’t just break on Saturday afternoon—it was violently dismantled in record fashion.
By the time the smoke cleared from Trevor Amann’s astonishing second-half hat trick, the Riverhounds secured a monumental 3-1 victory, proving that a team recently plagued by second-half defensive collapses could rise to dismantle one of the league’s gold standard clubs on a national stage.
As for the historic record-breaker — scoring three goals in a matter of less than four minutes (3:27 to be precise) –Amann was more concerned about a much bigger prize.
“I care about winning more than anything,” Amann said. “
I would prefer me and Chico (Albert Dikwa) both have 15 goals at the end of the year and win a championship, than one of us winning the Golden Boot. The team-first mentality is kind of what we need to have right now.”

[FIRST HALF COMMENTARY & HIGHLIGHTS]
1′ — Kickoff! Under heavy gray Pittsburgh skies, the whistle blows and this Eastern Conference rivalry match is officially underway.
3′ — Early pressure from Louisville. Lasse Kelp is forced to concede a quick corner kick down the left channel as LouCity aggressively pushes vertical right out of the gate.
4′ — Another corner conceded, this time off a clearing header from center-back Owen Mikoy. LouCity is throwing numbers into the Hounds’ defensive third early.
5′ — Total siege from the visitors. It is three corner kicks within the opening five minutes for Louisville. The Hounds’ defensive shape is tested immediately, but Lasse Kelp tracks back to successfully clear the danger out of the six-yard box.
8′ — First real spark from the Hounds. A decent build-up down the left flank sees Eliot Goldthorpe find a pocket of space. He flashes a dangerous, low curling cross across the face of the goal, but no black-and-yellow shirts are inside the area to meet it.
9′ — Tactical trigger activated. Pittsburgh switches into a furious high press, forcing Louisville’s center-backs into hurried clearances and creating real structural havoc for the LouCity build-up.
12′ — Playing direct. The Hounds bypass the double pivot with a booming long ball to target forward Albert Dikwa. Dikwa holds off his defender in space but opts not to turn toward the net, instead recycling a pass back to strike-partner Trevor Amann. Amann unloads a long-distance strike, but it doesn’t come close to troubling the keeper.
13′ — Kyle Adams gets into the referee’s book early, picking up a yellow card for a desperate handball to stop an over-the-top ball from reaching a sprinting Hounds attack.
13′ — BIG SAVE Nico Campuzano! Off the ensuing free kick sequence, Jansen Wilson finds room just outside the box and unleashes a dangerous right-footed effort aimed at the roof of the net. Campuzano tracks it perfectly and goes airborne for a spectacular, leaping two-handed save to tip it over the crossbar!
15′ — The Hounds build momentum. A driving run from Eliot Goldthorpe ends in a blocked shot, earning Pittsburgh their first corner of the afternoon. Sean Totsch is forced to head it clear under heavy pressure from Dikwa.
16′ — CHANCE! Off the resulting corner routine, the ball pinballs to the left side of the six-yard box. Danny Griffin reacts first, stabbing a quick right-footed shot toward the bottom left corner, but LouCity keeper Danny Faundez makes a superb sprawling save to deny the captain.
20′ — The sky breaks open. A heavy, torrential rainstorm starts hammering down on the F.N.B. Stadium turf. Slicks ball, faster turf—this changes the entire dynamic of the long-ball service.
22′ — Goldthorpe tests the keeper again, cutting inside onto his left foot and unloading a skidding shot from outside the box. Faundez handles the wet ball cleanly right in the center of his goal.
25′ — Brief stoppage in play as Louisville trainer comes out to attend to Faundez, who appears to have caught a knock during a crowded corner-kick collision.
28′ — INJURY DELAY. Real concern on the pitch as Albert Dikwa goes down hard on the slick turf following a heavy challenge. Trainers rush out immediately, but after a tense couple of minutes, the star striker works his way back to his feet and stays on the pitch.
29′ — YELLOW CARD. Victor Souza enters the book for the Hounds, committing a hard tactical foul on Jansen Wilson on the left wing to break up a dangerous LouCity counter-attack.
31′ — LouCity corner. Taylor Davila drops a beautiful cross into the six-yard box. Center-back Sean Totsch out-leaps his marker but pushes his header agonizingly wide of the right post. Huge let-off for Pittsburgh.
35′ — Spreading the field. Left-back Lasse Kelp drives into the attacking third, connects on a neat give-and-go with Jackson Wälti, and uncorks a heavy shot that flies high and wide over the crossbar.
43′ — LouCity building late. Amadou Dia swings a cross to the top of the box. Jansen Wilson hits a low, central right-footed shot that is securely corralled by Campuzano.
45′ — FOUR MINUTES of stoppage time announced by the fourth official.
45+2′ — DANGEROUS MOMENT! Eliot Goldthorp showcases spectacular acceleration, exploding into the right side of the penalty area. He fires a hard, low cross into the six-yard box that forces Faundez to completely sprawl out on the wet turf, desperately poking the ball away a split-second before a sliding Albert Dikwa can tap it home. A fascinating, physical opening 45 minutes in the rain. Louisville held the early edge in possession (57% to 43%) and set pieces, but the Hounds built massive momentum in the final fifteen minutes. Both defenses holding completely firm.

Amann turns with absolute aggression, takes a touch, and unleashes an absolute rocket of a right-footed shot into the top left corner of the net! Amann scores for the third straight match!

ABSOLUTE BEDLAM! Robbie Mertz works tirelessly on the edge of the final third to shield off defenders and keep possession alive. He cycles it out to right-back Perrin Barnes, who drops an absolute dime of a cross to the far post. Trevor Amann leaps into the air and power-heads it past a helpless Faundez into the top right corner! The Hounds are completely on fire!

UNBELIEVABLE! HISTORY AT F.N.B. STADIUM! Louisville is completely shell-shocked. Robbie Mertz turns provider again, cutting through a completely fractured LouCity midfield and delivering a lethal cross right into the goal box. Trevor Amann is right there to tap it home from point-blank range!

Jansen Wilson steps up to take the penalty kick and clinically blasts a right-footed shot into the top right corner, giving Nico Campuzano no chance. Louisville pulls one back.

Talk about a short turnaround. Less than 72 hours after what can only be described as a worst-case-scenario 2-1 defeat to winless expansion side Sporting Club Jacksonville, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC are back on the pitch.
But if you ask Head Coach Rob Vincent, the rapid reset is exactly what the doctor ordered. Vincent noted midweek that after a poor second-half collapse in the Florida humidity, he is glad to have a fierce competitor arriving immediately to force his squad to wash the taste of defeat from their mouths.
The test, however, could not be much steeper. The Hounds return to on Saturday to host bitter Eastern Conference rivals Louisville City FC. While Louisville hasn’t looked like the utterly untouchable regular-season juggernaut of recent years, they remain firmly entrenched near the top of the table and represent an elite USL Championship benchmark. he visiting side comes in with plenty of attacking firepower, as their 25 goals on the season is tied for second in the Championship. Jansen Wilson leads Louisville with five goals, while Chris Donovan has four goals and four assists to lead the team in goal contributions. But Louisville also has conceded 22 goals on the year — uncharacteristic of the reigning Players’ Shield holders — placing them in the lower half of the league in that regard.
Pittsburgh does have psychological leverage, owning perhaps their most signature win of the 2026 campaign from their trip to Kentucky on May 9, where they blanked LouCity 2-0. Yet, while the Hounds have historically found ways to steal points on the road in this rivalry, beating Louisville City FC at remains one of the most elusive feats in club history.
In fact, Pittsburgh has never beaten Louisville City on home turf.

To find the last time the Riverhounds kicked off a match at noon, you have to look back to last year’s USL Championship title match against Tulsa—a match that also aired in the flagship national CBS slot.
Fans tuning in will hear some familiar voices. The CBS broadcast team features the iconic Mike Watts on the call alongside analyst Devon Kerr, a frequent friend and guest of Pittsburgh Soccer Now’s Sounding Off on Soccer Podcast.
2️⃣ Reinforcements Arrive for the Attack
If the Hounds are going to put together a complete 90-minute performance, their heavily depleted attack is getting the exact injections it needs.
The frontline will see the crucial return of star striker Albert Dikwa, who was forced to sit out the Jacksonville disaster to serve a red card suspension stemming from the Brooklyn match. Joining him in a returned starting capacity should be midfielder Sam Bassett. Bassett, who has been nursing his way back to full fitness, was only utilized as a late 68th-minute substitute on Wednesday but is expected to take on a much heavier workload Saturday.
The real question for Vincent’s squad is defensive discipline. Pittsburgh’s last two consecutive league losses both followed an identical, frustrating script: controlling the first half, only to suffer catastrophic second-half defensive lapses against expansion teams. With Dikwa and Bassett restoring structure up top, the backline must find its shape to handle LouCity’s transition moments.

3️⃣ Wildfire Smoke and Volatile Weather Forecasts
Beyond the tactics, everyone in Pittsburgh will be keeping a very close eye on the sky leading up to noon.
Air quality has been a major talking point across Western Pennsylvania, with several Friday events cancelled due to heavy wildfire smoke drifting down from Minnesota and Canada. Current meteorological tracking expects the smoke shroud to largely dissipate by Saturday morning, which should clear the air for playing conditions.
However, the smoke is being pushed out by an approaching weather front that brings a high probability of storms in the Saturday forecast. Pittsburgh Soccer Now will be monitoring the radar and any potential weather delays closely as matchday approaches.
