Four defeats in their last five league matches—punctuated by Wednesday’s frustrating 1-0 home loss to FC Tulsa—have dropped Rob Vincent’s squad below .500 in league play at 7W-2D-8L (23 points).

While Pittsburgh still sits in 5th place in the Eastern Conference, the buffer above the playoff line has dissolved. With Rhode Island FC (22 pts) and Indy Eleven (21 pts) both holding games in hand, the Hounds enter August under real pressure to stop the bleed.

Now, a quick turnaround sends the Hounds across the country to face Oakland Roots SC (5W-6D-6L, 21 pts) at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Saturday night.

It’s a fixture that was nearly called off after a chaotic, high-stakes week off the pitch for the NorCal club.

On Friday, the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority held a tense emergency public meeting after Executive Director Henry Gardner threatened to cancel Saturday night’s match. The Authority sent the Roots a notice of default on July 17 claiming $1.4 million in back rent and operational fees. Following intervention from Alameda County supervisors, the board agreed to let Saturday’s game proceed as scheduled, though future home games remain in serious jeopardy.

If there is a silver lining to a grueling July, it’s that stepping out on the road—where Pittsburgh took a 2-0 victory in this exact fixture last September—might provide the exact circuit-breaker this club needs.

1. A Defense the Hounds Can Unbalance

If there is an opponent on the schedule built to help the Hounds snap out of their midseason scoring rut, it might be Oakland.

While the Roots boast potent attacking talent—led by 2025 Golden Boot winner Peter Wilson (10 goals), playmaker Wolfgang Prentice (5 goals, 6 assists), and veterans Florian Valot and Danny Trejo—their defensive third has been a sieve.
