Match Summary

The Riverhounds needed an positive result, and they found it on the West Coast. Backed by Eliot Goldthorp’s 21st-minute strike and getting back to the basics with arguably their best defensive performance of the season through 96 grueling minutes, Pittsburgh picked up a vital 1-0 road victory over Oakland Roots SC at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Saturday night.

The clean-sheet performance snaps a frustrating summer skid for Rob Vincent’s squad, pushing the Hounds to 8W-2D-8L (26 points) on the season and solidifying their hold on 5th place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

How It Happened

The opening stages at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum saw Oakland Roots SC dictate much of the tempo on their expansive home pitch, dominating possession upwards of 62 percent. The Riverhounds, however, remained patient and disciplined in a compact 4-4-2 shape. Up top, Albert Dikwa and Yu Tsukanome spearheaded occasional high-pressing traps, but the visitors spent most of the early frame absorbing pressure and limiting Oakland’s dangerous channels. Pittsburgh’s first real glimpse of goal came in the 18th minute when Charles Ahl surged down the left flank into the penalty area, though his low cross intended for a wide-open Dikwa at the far post was cut out by the Roots defense.

The breakthrough for Pittsburgh came just three minutes later off another opportunistic wide build-up. In the 21st minute, Ahl again cut in from the left and delivered a deep diagonal service towards the far post. After a deflection, the ball skipped through to Max Viera, who had made a clever, alert run to keep the play alive. Viera immediately cushioned a header back into the heart of the 18-yard box, finding an unmarked Eliot Goldthorp, who calmly slotted the ball home to put the Hounds up 1-0.

The match saw an extended delay in the 34th minute when Oakland midfielder Tommy McCabe suffered an apparent head injury. In a compelling twist for the home side, former Riverhound and Pitt standout Bertin Jacquesson was called off the bench early to replace McCabe.

Near the end of the half, Jacquesson did well to advance along the edge of the box, then sent a low shot through that forced his former college teammate, Nico Campuzano to dive for — but it was slightly off target.

Despite Oakland controlling the lion’s share of the ball through the close of the half, Pittsburgh’s defensive structure was immaculate—restricting Oakland to just three touches inside the 18-yard box and three total shots, allowing the Hounds to take their 1-0 advantage into the locker room.

The second 45 minutes saw Oakland Roots SC push forward in search of an equalizer, but Pittsburgh’s defensive structure refused to crack.

The hosts created their best opportunity of the night early in the half when Keegan Tingey whipped a dangerous cross to the edge of the six-yard box in the 51st minute, but Peter Wilson’s sliding effort flashed just wide of the left post. Twelve minutes later, Wilson threatened again off a Florian Valot corner, but his header cleared the crossbar.

Recognizing the need to stabilize central spaces and refresh tired legs on the wide Coliseum pitch, head coach Rob Vincent turned to his bench. Sam Bassett was introduced in the 60th minute to regain midfield possession, followed by a decisive four-player substitution in the 68th minute that brought on Danny Griffin, Trevor Amann, Junior Etou, and Perrin Barnes. The adjustments almost paid immediate dividends in the 78th minute when Amann slipped a clever pass into the box for Bassett, whose low right-footed strike shaved the outside of the right post.

Pittsburgh faced a late setback in the 80th minute when defender Victor Souza went down with an apparent injury and was forced off for Guillaume Vacter. Despite Oakland sending forward extra attackers—including former Hound Bertin Jacquesson—into the late push, Vacter and center-back Owen Mikoy shut down every high ball pumped into the 18-yard box. Mikoy drew a final defensive foul deep in the six minutes of stoppage time, putting the finishing touches on a grueling, professional 1-0 road shutout.

1. Masterclass in Game Management & Defensive Shape

While Oakland saw a bulk of the ball throughout the match, the Hounds were never truly out of control. Holding their compact 4-4-2 structure, Pittsburgh denied the Roots inside the 18-yard box for extended stretches. Even during second-half pressure—when Oakland threw key attack options like Danny Trejo and former Hound Bertin Jacquesson into the mix—Pittsburgh’s backline held firm, winning key free kicks in defensive transition through Mikoy and Souza to diffuse high-pressure moments.

2. Rob Vincent’s Squad Depth Seals the Result

Coach Vincent managed his bench brilliantly in the final 30 minutes to close out the victory. After starting Yu Tsukanome and Albert Dikwa up front, Vincent introduced Sam Bassett in the 60th minute to regain control of central spaces, followed by a massive four-player wave in the 68th minute (Danny Griffin, Trevor Amann, Junior Etou, and Perrin Barnes). Amann and Bassett nearly linked up for a second goal in the 78th minute when Amann set up Bassett for a razor-thin miss just wide of the post.

3. Fighting Through Midseason Injuries

The lone concern late in the match was defender Victor Souza, who went down with an apparent injury in the 80th minute and was replaced by Guillaume Vacter. Souza’s performance up to that point was stellar, but Vacter stepped right in alongside Mikoy to lock down 5 added minutes of high-stress stoppage time.

18′ — Lots of early possession for Oakland as Hounds press with DIkwa and Tsukanome up top not doing any damage yet. Hounds’ Charles Ahl finally breaks into the box but a low attempted cross for Albert Dikwa alone on back post is blocked. Ahl is clearly frustrated with himself.

21′ — GOAL!  PITTSBURGH 1, OAKLAND 0

Eliot Goldthorp is there in middle of box.  This time Ahl’s diagonal service from left side is intended for Dikwa after deflection on same right far post area — but scoots through for Max Viera who made an alert run to cover far post. Viera headed the ball  back to middle for an unmarked Goldthrope who slots it home.

34′ — Former Riverhound and Pitt standout, Bertin Jacquesson replaces Tommy McCabe because of what appears to be a head injury. Would also imagine there will be some added stoppage time as it took a while for McCabe to come off the field.

45′ ++ — Jacquesson did well to advance along the edge of the box, then sent a low shot through that forced his former college teammate, Nico Campuzano to dive for — but it was slightly off target.

Few match thoughts …  Possession stats now a whopping 72/38 in favor of Oakland as Hounds sitting in a pretty compact 4-4-2 shape, with occasional pressing moments on the big field from Dikwa and Tsukanome.  Hounds using Goldthorpe and Ahl on the wide midfield spots, while Robbie Mertz and Jackson Walti are in the double pivot.  Both sides with three shots apiece, but Pittsburgh with 11 touches in opposition box while Oakland with three.  Pittsburgh’s defensive shape has been outstanding in the first 45 minutes.

Second Half

60′ — SUB — Sam Bassett (IN) first reserve to come on for Rob Vincent’s squad.  The newest Hound, Tsukanome is done for the night.

51′ — Wow. Hounds get away by skin of their teeth — as back-to-back Oakland crosses from right side slip all the way through the goal box but they can’t connect even has ball sailed through dangerously each time. Most recently Keegan Tingey whip-cross finds Peter Wilson at the edge of the six-yard box, but his right-footed effort slips wide left.

60′ — Hounds Sub: Sam Bassett enters the match for Yu Tsukanome to bolster midfield possession.

63′ — Oakland Chance: Florian Valot corner finds Wilson inside the box, but his header clears the top-left crossbar.

68′ — Hounds Quad-Sub: Vincent freshens up the legs, bringing on Danny Griffin, Trevor Amann, Junior Etou, and Perrin Barnes.

📌 Match Notes

• The Context: Moving past a chaotic July, getting an early first half goal was much needed.  Heading into the match, they were shut out in its previous two matches, losses the past week to Rhode Island and FC Tulsa, both at home.

• The Goal: Eliot Goldthorp (21’) — Charles Ahl delivered a deep diagonal service from the left. Max Viera made a smart run to keep the play alive at the back post, heading the ball back into the heart of the 18-yard box for Goldthorp to slot home.  Though his work rate has been very high and he leads the team in shot attempts, Goldthorpe finally broke through with his second league goal this season.

• The Defensive Wall: Despite Oakland dominating possession on their massive home pitch, the Hounds limited the hosts to minimal clear-cut chances. Center-backs Owen Mikoy and Lasse Kelp marshaled the box expertly, while goalkeeper Nico Campuzano logged his fifth clean sheet of the league campaign.

• The Playoff Table: With the victory, Pittsburgh climbs to 26 points (8-2-8), widening their margin over the playoff line and staying within striking distance of Louisville City FC for the top-four seed race in the East.
