Match Summary

Riverhounds SC battled to a 0–0 draw against Sacramento Republic FC, leaning on a resilient defensive effort and a timely clean sheet from goalkeeper Nico Campuzano to secure a point at home.

With the result, the Riverhounds move to 27 points on the season, holding firm in the fifth spot in the USL Championship Eastern Conference standings.

Sacramento applied heavy pressure early, firing four shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes and probing Pittsburgh’s setup through midfielder Pep Casas.

“They gave us a few problems in the first half with their build,” Riverhounds head coach Rob Vincent said. “They have some talented midfielders. Casas is able to kind of pick the lock. He broke us down a few times, but the guys did a good job of getting back behind the ball. We tried to adjust a little bit at halftime to take some of him away. I think they started to play a little bit longer, which kind of suits us.”

Sacramento’s Mayele Malango was a constant threat on the wing, missing wide right on a run inside before launching a rising strike over a diving Campuzano that clattered off the crossbar. Sacramento forward Forster Ajago also found space in the box, but Pittsburgh’s backline closed quickly to soften the impact, leaving Campuzano with a routine save.

At the other end, Pittsburgh carved out high-quality first-half looks. Trevor Amann connected on a diving header off a cross, forcing former Riverhounds goalkeeper and 2020 Golden Glove winner Danny Vitiello into a full-extension dive to his left. Moments later, Charles Ahl picked out Albert Dikwa inside the box, but the forward’s header whistled just wide of the left post.

After halftime, defense took complete control. Sacramento held Pittsburgh to just three shots and a single shot on target in the second half—an Ahl distance strike in the 53rd minute that Vitiello collected comfortably. Pittsburgh’s best late chance arrived in the 77th minute when Danny Griffin threaded a pass to substitute Yu Tsukanome, only for Sacramento’s defensive block to shut down the threat.

Despite conceding seven corner kicks, the Hounds’ backline remained firm under pressure. Midfielder Jackson Wälti credited the structural foundation behind the clean sheet.

“They’ve been phenomenal,” Wälti said. “I think Owen, Gabriel, and Lasse have kind of been the pillars back there, but we have other guys on the bench who can do a great job as well. And I’ll put DG (Danny Griffin) and Robbie (Mertz) in that category as well in terms of the guys sitting right in front of the defenders a lot of the time.”

Vincent was equally pleased with his goalkeeper’s composure through traffic.

“He made some big claims,” Vincent said of Campuzano. “I don’t think he had any kind of spectacular saves to make, but just his presence—and he continues to get better. I’m happy for him and happy that we got through with a clean sheet. They put us under a little bit of pressure with some of those set pieces, so to get through that is a big step.”

Looking forward, both Vincent and Wälti highlighted the need for quicker starts and bolder possession play as the team works to translate clean sheets into three points.

“Once the game gets 15, 20 minutes in, the heart rate starts to drop, you start to settle in and things start to feel a little bit more comfortable,” Wälti said. “We just have to make sure that we get through that point, through the warmup and then minute one of the game, we’re already settled in. Defensively has always been Pittsburgh’s strong suit. Now we’re trying to change the way we play soccer a little bit, and we have to take the onus on ourselves to become the start of the attacking play.”

Vincent echoed the call for more attacking courage in the final third.

“We’re asking from the guys right now to be more aggressive, to take more risks, be a bit braver about making those decisions,” Vincent said. “It was good for us to get through 90 where you’re concentrating the whole way through and making sure that you get the clean sheet, even if you can’t go ahead and win the game. If we’re not going to win the game, let’s make sure we don’t lose the game as well.”

Pittsburgh returns to action at home on Saturday, Aug. 15, when they host the second-place Charleston Battery.
