It’s been quite a year-plus for Lola Abraham.

The recent Riverview High School graduate and incoming Pitt women’s soccer freshman Lola Abraham has received one more honor before she officially begins her collegiate quest, as she’s been named this year’s Gatorade Pennsylvania Girls Soccer Player of the Year, announced by the organization last week.

This Pittsburgh local is the first Riverview High School student-athlete to be named Gatorade Pennsylvania Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

The award, which celebrates the nation’s top high school athletes for excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community, distinguishes Abraham as Pennsylvania’s best high school girls soccer player. The incoming Pitt midfielder posted 77 goals with 20 assists on the season – totaling 176 goals and 37 assists in her high school career. Abraham recorded a hat trick in 18 of the 25 games she played, including 12 four-goal games and one five-goal game. Abraham was also honored as  the Moe Rosensteel Most Outstanding Player Award winner as the top player in Western Pennsylvania, Abraham is a two-time First Team All-State selection.

Abraham, a Pitt commit, eventually would get a chance to not only get on the field and play with her high school teammates, but in just three seasons, she helped turn the program around — culminating with a remarkable 2023 campaign, where she led the Riverview to its first WPIAL championship appearance and a runner-up finish in the WPIAL and PIAA Class A playoffs.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.
