Duquesne Women’s Soccer junior midfielder Margey Brown was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week, becoming the first Duke to earn the solo honor since Katie O’Connor in 2017.
Brown recorded nine points on the week, four of which came by goals. The junior came into the week, and season, with two combined goals in her first two seasons and eight total points.
“It means a lot to me to have such a great start to the season,” Brown told PSN. “I’ve worked hard to get here and to be named A-10 Offensive Player of the Week is such an awesome accomplishment. I’m also grateful for my teammates for giving me so many opportunities in front of goal.”
The week was a milestone one, rather two, for Brown who matched program records by recording the 11th hat trick in Dukes history and also recorded seven points.
Brown furthered her scoring with a goal at 87:58 in a Saturday afternoon neutral site contest against Pitt in a 2-1 setback. The goal was Duquesne’s first against the Panthers since Aug. 21, 2016, a span of three prior contests.
Also earning A-10 nods this week were Loyola Chicago’s Alison Deardorff who made her career debut in goal and had a clean sheet, securing defensive player of the week. Dayton’s Liv Grenada played 66 minutes in her debut, scoring a goal in the 11th minute in a 2-1 victory over Loyola Marymount, taking the rookie of the week selection.
Brown was not the only Duke to make their presence known in the record book. Junior captain Mackenzie Muir was given four assists which is a solo record for a single game, passing three former players.
Initially Muir was given an assist on the last goal but upon watching the goals back she was assigned three more helpers, something she considered “cool” that she secured her place in the Duquesne record books.
The first came on the team’s second goal, which came when Muir fired a shot and after a save Brown buried the ball in the back of the net.
Brown’s second goal of the evening came when Muir found her with space, and she beat the Mercyhurst keeper low right.
Muir’s third assist was very similar to her first with her shot being saved and Hailey Longwell cleaning up the rebound, good for her second goal of the night.
The final assist was the initial one assigned to her on Brown’s third goal.
Duquesne will look to build off a win and a team effort against Pitt with a two-game homestand which commences Sunday at 3 p.m. against Bowling Green.
The contest is a double header with the men’s team hosting Canisius at 12:30 p.m.
