The first weekend of high school soccer went into extra time with a host of Sunday matches, including the JRK Memorial Classic at Pine-Richland, where PSN’s team including Matt Popchock, John Krysinsky and our newcomer, Randy Warner provided coverage of the action.

The Kiski School showed that they’re a very tough team for any WPIAL team to beat, just ask perennial Class 4A title contenders, Seneca Valley, who came up short on Sunday, as Kiski came up with a game winner with less than a minute left in the match, winning 3-2.

The Kiski School outlast Seneca Valley, 3-2 in battle of PA boys high school soccer heavyweights

Other results from JRK Memorial Classic included Moon pulling away against Winchester Thurston, winning 3-0 to complete a two match sweep over the weekend. We caught up with both coaches, Moon’s Tyler Blake and WT’s Adam Brownold, with their takeaways and thoughts about their teams heading into section play.

Central Valley also are off to a 2-0 start, outscoring hosts Pine Richland, 4-3, in a match broadcast by PSN’s Matt Popchock, who also had post match interviews with forward Cameron DeVincentis, who scored twice, and Head Coach Jack Shearer, who has his alma mater in good form at the start of the season.

WPIAL Soccer Watch (Sunday, August 25, 2024)

It’s a rare Sunday schedule with a handful of WPIAL boys soccer teams in action, including the final day of the JRK Memorial Classic, as Pittsburgh Soccer Now will return to Pine-Richland High School to bring more coverage from another full slate of four boys games.

There are few other good matches on tap too.  Including what seems to be an annual showdown between Upper St. Clair and Plum, in the Plum Tournament.

On the girls side, it’s day two of the South Hills Classic, being hosted by South Park.

Among the matches at Pine-Richland, The Kiski School and Seneca Valley will meet in one of the most anticipated match-ups this weekend.  Led by Head Coach George Williams, Seneca Valley has been among the most successful boys soccer programs in the WPIAL and PIAA over the course of the past decade winning three WPIAL titles and two PIAA crowns.

The Kiski School doesn’t compete in the WPIAL, they’ve won four consecutive PAISAA titles.

Both Seneca and Kiski looked impressive in their 2024 season debuts at Pine-Richland on Saturday, with the Raiders pulling away in the second half against Wheeling Park (WV), for a 3-2 win.  Kiski were tested early by Central Catholic, but proved to be too dynamic and skillful for the WPIAL side, riding a four-goal second half in a 5-1 victory.

It’s an especially fascinating match-up to see how Seneca Valley, which usually likes to play at a breakneck pace, sending waves of attackers forward while using regular rotations of subs, will handle playing a team that is equally as deep but has speed, size and can control possession and tempo with a handful of players who are so strong on the ball.

“We appreciate being invited to this, but this is our preseason,” Kiski School head coach Jonty Loukes proclaimed after Saturday win with a roster that’s had a lot of overhaul.

“We were a bit rusty. Have a bunch of new guys this year. We have four returning starters. Know that coming here, it’s going to be high intensity, high tempo, and we have to be ready for that.”
