WPIAL / PIAA Boys and Girls Soccer Daily Report (Labor Day Edition): Final Sunday showcases add final competition for some before Section play gets back off to the races

It is Labor Day, which marks the final quiet day on the District calendar before high school soccer shifts into full-throttle section play from Monday through Thursday.

To close out the holiday weekend, Sunday brought a rare slate of tournament and showcase action at Avonworth, Belle Vernon, and Chartiers-Houston.

At the Avonworth Showcase, the hosting Class 2A Antelopes stepped up against top-tier Class 3A competition. For program leads like Avonworth Girls, testing themselves against championship-caliber opponents early in the fall serves a clear long-term purpose: building resilience and tactical sharpness for the stretch run.

On the boys’ side, Avonworth capped off a dominant weekend sweep with a 4-1 victory over a travel-tested Mercyhurst Prep squad—demonstrating why the ‘Lopes remain contenders in what should be another section gauntlet — but in this new realignment cycle, they’ll be paired with the likes of Quaker Valley and Shady Side Academy instead of the Beaver County schools.

Speaking of section play, this coming will be a slow build up to Section competition hitting full stride as Class 4A boys and girls section matches will start up on Wednesday and Thursday.

At that point, we’ll be off to the races!

Girls Match Notes

South Fayette 5, Avonworth 1 (Avonworth Tournament)

Defending PIAA champion South Fayette showcased its attacking firepower in a 5-1 victory over tournament host Avonworth. Gabby Beinecke led the Lions’ front line with a hat-trick performance, while Stella Medvec and Silvi Rossi each added single tallies. Rossi also orchestrated the attack with a pair of assists. Despite the scoreline, Avonworth continues to intentionally schedule top-tier 3A powers to sharpen its squad for the Class 2A postseason push.

Thomas Jefferson 5, Beth-Center 1 (Belle Vernon Tournament)

Thomas Jefferson surged to a 5-1 victory over Beth-Center at the Belle Vernon Showcase. The Jaguars were fueled by multi-goal performances from Chloe O’Hare, who netted her first two varsity goals, and Avery Koah, who bagged two tallies of her own. Haley Tintera added a single goal to complete the scoring for TJ.

Belle Vernon 1, Pine-Richland 1 (Belle Vernon Tournament)

Hosts Belle Vernon and Class 4A visitor Pine-Richland battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw on the beach at the Paul Sasko Kickoff Classic. With no extra-time periods in regular-season play, both squads walked away with a share of the honors after 80 minutes of intense action.

Boys Match Notes

Avonworth 4, Mercyhurst Prep 1 (Avonworth Tournament)

Avonworth captured the ‘Lopes Cup title with a convincing 4-1 victory over District 10 contender Mercyhurst Prep, completing an impressive weekend sweep. Calder Mahan and Alex Hayes spearheaded the Antelopes’ attack with two goals apiece, while Hal Bevington and Gus Zimmerman each tallied assists. Mercyhurst Prep wrapped up a heavy Pittsburgh road swing after competing in the JRK Memorial Classic the weekend prior.

Belle Vernon 1, Thomas Jefferson 1 (Paul Sasko Kickoff Classic)

Section rivals Belle Vernon and Thomas Jefferson played to a tight 1-1 draw to wrap up action at the Paul Sasko Kickoff Classic. Both sides created chances in a physical, playoff-style environment, but neither could find the game-winner before the final whistle.

Chartiers-Houston 2, McGuffey 1 (Chartiers-Houston Tournament)

Host Chartiers-Houston edged out McGuffey 2-1 in a close tournament final to claim top honors on their home turf. Steel Valley also picked up a result on the day with a 2-0 shutout over Brownsville in the consolation match.
