WPIAL / PIAA Boys High School Soccer Daily Report (Sept 8): In 4A v 3A clash, North Hills, Butler grind out scoreless draw

Getting back into the swing of things, WPIAL / PIAA boys soccer in the region provided a few section contests on Tuesday, while many teams played non-conference contests with a lot of close contests and some interesting results (defending PIAA and WPIAL Class 1A champs Bentworth lost for the first time in nearly two years, against Class 2A Elizabeth Forward, 2-1 and Class 2A Shady Side Academy knocked off defending Class 3A champs, West Allegheny, 3-2)

Full section play in all four classifications will commence on Thursday.

Pittsburgh Soccer Now stopped by Martorelli Stadium to catch the non-conference battle between North Hills and Hampton, which ended in a scoreless 0-0 draw.

Without an extra 20 minutes of overtime following rule changes that eliminated regular season OT, both head coaches, North Hills’ Kyle Boggs and Hampton’s Matt McAwley, along with their respective goalkeepers, Adrien Werner and Caden Harding, who posted clean sheets, offered some fascinating perspectives post-game, which you can catch in full on PSN’s YouTube Channel and in clips on PSN’s social media platforms.

“North Hills is always a really quality opponent. They always have a game plan that is really solid. Defensively, they are always very strong… and Martorelli is always a tough field to come to. It’s narrow, and they use that to their advantage very well,” McAwley said.

I thought my guys played really well tonight—we possessed the ball, we worked it around, we just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

Boggs was hoping to have some momentum for his group heading into the gauntlet of playing in Class 4A Section 3, starting vs Butler on Thursday.

“I think our first half was average… they came out better in the second half. We just couldn’t get anything generated up top—they played us tough,” Boggs stated.

“Hampton’s a good team, they’ve always been tough, and I love playing against them as we get ready for section play. Overall it was a fun match; it would have just been nice to find the back of the net.”

Among the topics also discussed were adjusting to the no-overtime rule, adapting to the Diagonal System of Officiating, and how both squads are positioned heading into their section openers on Thursday.

North Hills kicks off section play on Thursday against Butler, while Hampton travels to face Woodland Hills.
