WPIAL Boys and Girls Soccer Featured Match Capsules & Schedule (9/3/2024)

As far as section play goes, it’s a very light Tuesday schedule, with only a Girls and Boys 3A, Section 3 and 4, playing matches that count in their section standings, while all the other boys and girls soccer teams in action on the day after the Holiday return to action in non-conference play.

Both boys and girls schedules are listed below.

For today’s match previews, we carved out two of the most interesting matchups that will played about a mile apart on Carson Street:

Girls

South Fayette vs Oakland Catholic — This will be the first section match for both sides. The defending Class 3A champs Lions return to the site of their biggest triumph, Highmark Stadium.

The Lions have not shied away from top competition early this season. They started the first week, losing at Class 4A Peters Township and Bethel Park, but also boast impressive wins against West Allegheny and Class 2A defending champs, Avonworth, both by 4-0 scorelines.  Leading the way for South Fayette this season are a pair of all-section players Abbey Spalla (Beadling) and Mia Deramo (Hounds Academy/Youngstown St commit), who scored the golden goal in beating Moon in the WPIAL final at Highmark Stadium last November. Oakland Catholic began the season participating in the South Hills Classic at South Park, where they were defeated twice (talented 1A Winchester Thurston, 2-0, then to Fort LeBouef, 1-0).  Leading OC, includes seniors Nica Folino the squad’s primary keeper and midfielder Corinna Martella along with junior defender Noelle Spears (Steel City FC).

Boys

Allderdice vs Penn-Trafford – Lets stay on Carson Street for our boys match-up to preview.  While there’s a bunch of non-conference matches on the boys side, the interesting Class 3A, Section 3 encounter that was supposed to be played last week, but was moved back is between the Dragons and Warriors. This match will be played at Cupples Stadium on the South Side.

These are two schools that played for many years in the top classification.  Last year, David Thyberg, who served as assistant for a number of years, stepped in to take the head coaching position after Sam Bellin retired, after more than a decade at the helm of his alma mater.  In its 3A debut, the Dragons (2-1-0 overall) have fared well thus far, defeating Knoch (2-0) and West Mifflin (4-0) while losing to perennial WPIAL title contender, Mars (2-0).   The win vs West Mifflin boosted the ‘Dice to a 1-0-0 start in section competition. Senior midfielder Jacek Piekut (Steel City FC) has been the key playmaker for the Dragons, notching a goal and three assists, while senior midfielder Aiden Thomas (Hounds Academy) scored both goals in the win vs Knoch.  Ryan Hankey, who helped lead Penn Hills to the playoffs a few years ago, is now the new coach at Penn-Trafford.  The Warriors are off to a 1-1-0 start, beating former section rival Hempfield 9-0, then losing to Franklin Regional, 3-1, to begin section play.  The Warriors are led by a pair of seniors, Chad Pusateri and J.J. Porter along with junior Angelo Mastroianni.  The latter two are back to form after ACL injuries last year.  Pusateri scored in the section opener last week against Franklin Regional.
