Post Match Buzz: Riverhounds HC Bob Lilley, GK Eric Dick on squandering another lead

The Riverhounds were right there — in position again to walk away with a full three points — holding a 1-0 lead well into the second half.

And once again, they surrendered a second half goal that washed away a chance to take all three critical points, as Birmingham Legion FC’s Stefano Pinho raced into the box to find the equalizer in the 79th minute that canceled out Edward Kizza’s first half goal.

PSN’s Griffin Floyd was at Highmark Stadium, where he provided the match recap and also caught post match reaction from Head Coach Bob Lilley and goalkeeper Eric Dick.

Near misses haunt Riverhounds in 1-1 draw against Birmingham

As a result of the loss, paired with other match results from Saturday, the Hounds (36 points) remain in 11th place in the 12-team Eastern Conference, trailing 8th place Loudoun United (38 points), North Carolina FC (37 points) and Hartford (37 points).  North Carolina lost, while Loudoun converted a late corner kick against Colorado Springs Switchbacks to earn a draw.

Here’s the latest USL Championship standings.

Once again, the Hounds squandered a chance to get back over the playoff line.  Next week, they’ll face a must win situation as they’ll face last place The Miami FC.

Post Match Interviews

Riverhounds SC Head Coach Bob Lilley: “Unfortunately we picked a bad time to fall off defensively”

“It was as close to a must-win as you can get. Mathematically, we’re not out of it, but we had three home games to take nine points and probably needed to do that.”

“When the season’s over, if we don’t make the playoffs, which is more than likely at this point, it’s going to be a tough offseason, because I don’t think we’ll be a ton of points out of it. But some of the lessons you have to learn aren’t as pleasant as others.”

Riverhounds Goalkeeper Eric Dick: “It’s on us”

“We’ve shown that we can play with anybody and beat anybody on any given night. We just have to put the final product out for the full 90 minutes,” Eric Dick said.

“The effort’s there. The guys crushed it and work their butts off, but we just have to find another gear. I know everyone wants to give more because everyone’s unhappy right now.”
