  • Matches to Watch
    • Class 4A – Section 3 – Pine-Richland vs North Allegheny – In an ultra-competitve Section 3, Pine-Richland (7-3-0, 5-1-0), led by its new coach, Jordan Wiegand, who we know from having been at the helm of the boys program for the past six seasons, has the Rams in solid position with a talented group of players that includes Cincinnati commit, junior Emma Kline (Riverhounds Academy).  In the first match with North Allegheny, Pine-Richland’s late goal was the difference.  The Tigers program, which has won three WPIAL titles in a four-year stretch (2019-22),  always play a very tough out of section schedule, and that’s been no exception this year, losing a pair of non-section matches last week (a pair of 3-0 losses to Fox Chapel and Peters Township).  Fortunately, for NA (7-5-0, 4-2-0), they bounced back when returning to section competition on Wednesday, when they defeated North Hills, 3-0, as Averie Bierker scored twice, and Emma Schupansky added goal.
    • Class 1A – Section 4 – Springdale vs Winchester Thurston – To this point this season, Springdale has been head and shoulders above the rest of Class 1A field, as they’re without a loss, but will face one of their closest competitors, third place Winchester Thurston (6-4-0, 5-2-0 in section).  The Dynamos defeated the Bears in their first match this season, 4-0.  Last season’s WPIAL and PIAA Class 1A runner up, have adjusted well to life without Lola Abraham, as they continue to be a strong team in this season who are pushing for this section title. Springdale’s Senior Molly Hurley scored with 31 seconds left in the first period of extra time last week) will look to slow down Springdale’s high scoring outfit which is leading Class 1A in goals scored (62), as they’ve posted four shutouts this season. Maeve Dever and Margherita Memoli are two seniors who were All-WPIAL standouts last season who are leading the way for Winchester Thurston.  Briana Ross and Hurley are senior leaders for Springdale, who reached the WPIAL final in 2022 and were a semifinalist in 2023.
