MATCH DAY NOTES

  • The latest WPIAL standings along with PSN’s projected playoff seedings were posted on Sunday, as the regular season now comes down to the final week and a half, with the WPIAL expected to announce its boys and girls playoff brackets on Wednesday, October 16.
    • The Standings updated on Sunday do not reflect the official move by the WPIAL to remove Allderdice and Obama Academy teams from the sections they were previously competing and the wins/losses that were tabulated.  Those will be updated in next week’s post.   Allderdice will still be playing  at Butler tonight as a Non-Conference match, although that match was set up to be a huge match with postseason implications, as they were the last two teams battling for the fourth place spot in Class 4A, Section 3.

  • Monday’s Matches We’re Keeping Tabs On…

Class 4A, Section 3 — North Allegheny vs Seneca Valley — Watch out…   here comes North Allegheny!   The Tigers are climbing back into contention after an up-and-down first half of the season in section play, North Allegheny has won two in a row as they head up I-79 to face Seneca Valley in a rematch which the Raiders took in a very tight contest, 1-0.  Still, Seneca Valley comes into this match in the drivers seat in Section 3, without a loss in section play, with its only two blemishes thus far this season coming in the opener vs Cumberland Valley and losing to Section 2 leaders, Peters Township.

Class 2A, Section 2 — Burrell vs Freeport — In one week, Section 2 standings were turned upside down, thanks in large part to these two schools picking up victories against previously unbeaten North Catholic.  Burrell (10-2-1, 6-2-1 in section) are riding a six match win streak, topped by a head turning 4-1 victory vs North Catholic followed by a 2-1 win vs Knoch.   Freeport (9-1-1, 6-1-1 in section) are the last team to beat Burrell, in a tight, 1-0 affair.  Freeport is unbeaten in its last six matches (5-0-1) as they currently hold a very slight lead in this Section title race.
