Robert Morris take down Cleveland State, 1-0, to continue their climb in Horizon League standings

RMU women’s soccer team secured a key Horizon League road victory, defeating Cleveland State 1-0 on the strength of a first-half goal by Paloma Swankler.

The win improves the Colonials to 4-4-5 overall and 3-1-2 in Horizon League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Cleveland State came close to opening the scoring in the 19th minute, hitting the crossbar.

Just three minutes later, RMU found the breakthrough. Off a corner kick, Ava Trethewey played the ball short to Haleigh Finale, who delivered a pinpoint cross into the box. Junior forward Paloma Swankler met it with a header to score her fifth goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Brenna Murray kept the Vikings at bay for the rest of the half, making one key save to preserve RMU’s lead.

Cleveland State’s bench was shown a yellow card in the 73rd minute.

Despite being outshot in the second half, RMU held firm, recording six shots of their own. Cleveland State pressed for an equalizer, firing 10 shots, but the Colonials’ defense held strong.

  • Cleveland State outshot RMU 18-9, with the Vikings landing four shots on goal to RMU’s three.
  • The Colonials won the corner kick battle 4-2.
  • Emerson JohngarloShauna GambleJillian MarvinAva Trethewey, and Taylor Day played the full 90 minutes. Trethewey’s assist on Swankler’s goal marked her team-leading fourth of the season. Goalkeeper Brenna Murray recorded four saves to earn her fourth clean sheet of the year.
  • Sophomore forward Joey Tomlinson earned her first career start in the match, logging a career-high 66 minutes. The Perkasie, Pa., native has one career goal to her name.
  • Junior forward Paloma Swankler, from Irwin, Pa., continues her scoring form with her fifth goal of the season. She now has 12 points (5g, 2a) in 2024, placing her third in the Horizon League in points.

UP NEXT

The Colonials will hit the road again next week for a pair of games in Wisconsin. RMU will face Milwaukee on Thursday, October 17 at 8:00 PM, followed by a matchup against Green Bay on Sunday, October 20 at 1:00 PM.
