Allderdice captures Boys Soccer City League title; will host PIAA subregional playoff

As Allderdice senior midfielder Jacek Piekut pointed out to Pittsburgh Soccer Now this week, it wasn’t the postseason path that he and his teammates envisioned at the start of the season, nonetheless, Allderdice (11-4-1) defeated Obama Academy (8-11-0), 5-0, to win the Boys Soccer City League title on Wednesday night at Cupples Stadium.

Senior seniors Aiden Thomas scored two goals while Luke Peña, Piekut and Daniel Mrsic each scored in the impressive performance for the Dragons, who topped the Eagles for the second time in a week.

Senior Hari Arunachalam posted the clean sheet for the Dragons, who will enter the PIAA Class 3A playoffs in a subregional.

One one level, the win was anticlimactic for Allderdice, as they had expected and continued to hope to have a chance to complete in the WPIAL playoffs, as they, along with Obama Academy, had started the season competing in the WPIAL.

However, after playing nearly two-thirds of their season against WPIAL competition in Boys Class 3A, the City Schools were informed earlier this month that, because of a change implemented by the PIAA in the biennial realignment, as City League schools and members of PIAA District VIII, they would not be eligible to participate in the state tournament as representatives of the WPIAL.

Allderdice will now play the District 9 champion Wednesday to get onto the proper PIAA State Playoff bracket in Class 3A, where the winner will face the District 10 champ in a first round matchup on Nov. 5.
