Pitt Men’s Soccer crushes Cavaliers 4-1, secures share of ACC title

Pitt Men’s Soccer dismantled the Virginia Cavaliers 4-1 on Friday, picking up their most lopsided conference win of the season in doing so.

Midway through the first half, the Panthers (12-3, 6-1 ACC) scored three goals in a span of 155 seconds, blowing the game wide open before cruising to victory. The win gives Pitt 18 points and secures at least a share of the regular season ACC title, putting them in the driver’s seat for the top seed with the conference tournament looming.

Luis Sahmkow got things started in the 21st minute, battling his way toward the goal before dropping into a smooth slide that knocked a feed from Guilherme Feitosa into the net.

Feitosa picked up his second assist of the night barely ten minutes later, sparking the three goal outburst as he lifted a rainbow of a pass that allowed Casper Svendby to remain onside—confirmed after an official review—before beating Cavaliers goalkeeper Joey Batrouni.

“Just instinctive,” Feitosa said of the looping assist. “Time goes so fast, I’ve gotta make a decision so quickly. I did it and happily the team benefitted from it.”

In the blink of an eye, the Panthers doubled their lead to 4-0.

The next goal started with an Albert Thorsen breakaway that Batrouni managed to quash with a sliding block. The ball skipped away toward Lasse Dahl, who took full advantage of the suddenly empty net. 40 seconds after that it was Casper Grening’s turn to join the fun, standing in perfect position to intercept a Cavaliers’ turnover inside the penalty box and flip it through traffic.

“It’s something we also work on a lot, building momentum off our good actions,” Feitosa said of the lightning-quick rally. “Once we scored one or had a couple good actions, everyone celebrated… I think that’s why we kept going and going and going.”

Virginia got on the board with less than seven minutes to play, beating Pitt keeper Cabral Carter off a corner kick.

The next game Pitt Men’s Soccer plays will be their regular season finale, set for a 7pm opening kickoff at Syracuse on Friday, November 1.
