Instant Recap
On an extremely damp, rainy night at FNB Stadium, the Hounds managed to seize an early lead and hold on for dear life en route to a 1-0 victory over Loudoun United on Saturday night.
With the playing conditions difficult, the Hounds benefitted greatly from an early goal off the right foot of Sam Bassett. The midfielder received a quick pass central from Charles Ahl, and then turned his eyes goalward from 25 yards out. His rocket of a shot easily ripped past everyone, including the Loudoun keeper, and nestled into the top-right corner to give the hosts a quick advantage in the eighth minute.
The Hounds would nearly double their money ten minutes later, as Trevor Amann bagged an easy tap-in right in front of goal off a cross from the left wing. But Loudoun would be saved by the whistle, as the side judge would rule Amann a small step ahead of the last defender and blew the play dead.
Loudoun would earn their best chance of the night later in the first half. A corner swung in from the far side of the field would bounce around the box for a moment before an attacker managed to steer a shot towards net. His effort would get past Campuzano in the Hounds net, but the post would prove his best friend as the shot clanged off and out before being cleared away to safety.
Loudoun would have another chance to equalize in the second half as Giorgi Lomtadze would be left with an open net after a cross was flicked to the back post. Any shot on-target would’ve leveled the score, but Lomtadze’s effort would sail too high and over the crossbar to the visitors’ dismay.
Ultimately, the Hounds early lead would prove to be enough, as the two sides would see out the waterlogged contest to its 1-0 conclusion in favor of the hosts. The result bumps the Hounds to third in the Eastern Conference above Detroit City – though the latter has several games in hand – and keeps Loudoun firmly planted outside the playoff picture.
The Hounds have a chance to make those points stick next weekend, as they’ll hit the road and head to Detroit in a top-half contest in the Eastern Conference.
