MATCH PREVIEW

Springdale (20-1-0, WPIAL-District 7) vs Dock Mennonite (20-3-0, District 1)

Cumberland Valley School District, Bald Eagle Middle School, Mechanicsburg, PA

Kickoff — 7 p.m.

Led by the Husband-Wife coaching duo, Mark Bentley and Makenna Krebs, Springdale has proven its dominance against WPIAL teams all season long — and have pushed forward through the PIAA playoffs as a team on a mission even with some challenges along the way.

The Dynamos faced WPIAL’s Seton LaSalle in the PIAA semifinal in a match played at North Allegheny on Tuesday and were in control for much of the match, coming away with a convincing, 4-0, win.

Once again, it was Hailey Marchlewski at the forefront of the attack, with her second brace in as many matches, scoring two goals in the win.

The WPIAL Champs defeated Bishop Guilfoyle, 2-1, as Marchlewski’s two goals were the difference in the tournament’s quarterfinal round.

There really have not had any shortage of goals for the Dyanmos this season — as they put that on display, scoring five times in the WPIAL final, beating Winchester Thurston, 5-3 to earn the school’s first Girls WPIAL title.

WPIAL Girls Soccer Class 1A Final: Springdale 5, Winchester Thurston 3

Make no mistake — Springdale haven’t had an easy ride to make it this far.

In the opening round of the PIAA playoffs, when edging Conemaugh Township in a match that ended 2-2 (winning in a penalty kick shootout), Springdale showed lots of toughness and resolve to battle back.  The Dynamos’ two primary attacking threats, Bri Ross and Molly Hurley scored in regulation, while also converting their penalties. Lacey Shondeck also scored on her penalty attempt. Goalkeeper Baileigh Haas made two saves in that shootout, and has proven to be rock solid all season long.

Coming from always strong District 1, Dock Mennonite are back in a familiar place.

Last year, the Pioneers rolled Riverview, 5-1, to take home the team’s first state title.  DM returns a handful of players who played key roles in last year’s PIAA title, including  sophomore Ashley Brown, who scored four goals in the state final against the Raiders in 2023.

For Springdale, a program with a very strong history, they have played in four state title matches, last reaching this point in 2011. The other finals appearances came in 2009 and 1997.

Since Class 1A began (in 2010), only Greensburg Central Catholic (2012 and 2013) and Shady Side Academy (2017) won PIAA titles from the WPIAL.

Look for updates to come from Mechanicsburg throughout Friday from this match and the other two matches featuring WPIAL teams (Moon in Boys Class 3A and Bentworth in Boys Class 1A)
