WPIAL / PIAA Boys Daily Report and Weekend Preview (Sept 3): Storms disrupt Thursday slate as Franklin Regional, BCC, Riverview & Butler dodge rain to secure wins

As Western Pennsylvania high schoolers settle into the full rhythm of back-to-school schedules and classroom routines, the high school soccer calendar hits another gear heading into the Labor Day weekend.

Teams across the region are shaking off early-season rust, building chemistry, and adjusting to full weeks of training and match play.

UPDATE (9/3/2026)

It was supposed to be a busy Thursday on the pitch across Western Pennsylvania as WPIAL boys soccer section play for select Class 3A, 2A, and 1A programs was on tap, alongside a deep slate of marquee non-section and cross-classification clashes.

Mother Nature proved to be the toughest opponent on the pitch Thursday night across Western Pennsylvania.

Heavy rain, lightning, and scattered thunderstorms swept through the region during the evening hours, resulting in widespread postponements, early abandonments, and suspended matches across the WPIAL boys soccer schedule.

However, several teams managed to dodge the worst of the weather—either by kicking off early in the afternoon or squeezing in abbreviated contests before lightning halted play.  Check out the results below.

Match Notes & Highlights

Franklin Regional 5, Kiski Area 0

In Section 1-3A action, Franklin Regional improved to 2-1 (2-0 in section) by powering past Kiski Area in a weather-shortened contest.

• Mike Hillebrand scored two goals.

• Josh Smith netted two goals.

• Rory Bayne added a single tally to complete the 5-0 shutout before the rain halted play.

Riverview 8, St. Joseph 0

Riverview put on an offensive clinic early in the afternoon to roll past St. Joseph in Section 3-1A play.

• Mason Bodnar led the way with 2 goals and 1 assist.

• Chandler Yorio bagged a pair of goals.

• Sebastian Chaparro orchestrated the attack with 1 goal and 3 assists.

• Greg Morse and Dennis Underwood each contributed a goal and an assist, while Nico Lascola rounded out the scoring.

⚽️ Beaver County Christian 4, Sewickley Academy 1

BCC earned a big Section 1-1A victory on the road in a match officially called at halftime due to lightning and incoming severe weather.

• Zach Stephens was involved in all 4 goals, registering 2 goals and 2 assists.

• Luke Mason and Ethan Guevara added goals to keep BCC undefeated at 3-0 (2-0 in section).

⚽️ Butler 3, Baldwin 0

Butler picked up a clean non-section shutout over Baldwin before the worst of the evening storms hit.

• Cullin Forbes provided the spark with two goals.

• Jude Perhacs notched a goal and an assist.

• Thad Mago recorded the clean sheet in net for the Golden Tornado.

⚽️ Beth-Center 1, Chartiers-Houston 1

Points were shared in Section 2-1A as Beth-Center and Chartiers-Houston battled to a 1-1 draw.

• ⚽️ Parker Amos scored the lone goal for Beth-Center.

John Krysinsky has covered soccer and other sports for many years for various publications and media outlets. He is also author of 'Miracle on the Mon' -- a book about the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, which chronicles the club, particularly the early years of Highmark Stadium with the narrative leading up to and centered around a remarkable match that helped provide a spark for the franchise. John has covered sports for Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, DK Pittsburgh Sports, Pittsburgh Sports Report, has served as color commentator on Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC broadcasts, and worked with OPTA Stats and broadcast teams for US Open Cup and International Champions Cup matches held in the US. Krysinsky also served as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at his alma mater, Point Park University, where he led the Pioneers to the first-ever winning seasons and playoff berths (1996-98); head coach of North Catholic boys (2007-08), associate head coach of Shady Side Academy boys (2009-2014).
