Stormy Thursday forces wave of postponements; when is a high school match official?

Mother Nature dominated the pitch on Thursday night across Western Pennsylvania. Torrential downpours, severe lightning delays, and scattered flash flooding swept through the region during the evening hours, causing widespread postponements, mid-match suspensions, and rescheduled contests across the WPIAL boys soccer slate.

However, a handful of teams managed to dodge the worst of the weather—either by kicking off early in the afternoon or battling through abbreviated contests before officials halted play.

NFHS & PIAA Weather Policy: When does a high school soccer match count as official?

With Thursday’s severe weather causing confusion around which scores count and which games must be replayed, here is how official decisions are made.

Because the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) operates under National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rules, weather-related delays, early stoppages, and match completions are strictly governed by NFHS Rule 7-1-3.

Here is the exact breakdown of how PIAA rules dictate weather cancellations, official results, and suspended matches:

When is a game considered “Official”?

• After 1 Complete Half (40 Minutes): If the first 40 minutes of play have been completed in their entirety and the game is subsequently called due to bad weather, lightning, or darkness, it is considered a complete, official game. The score at the exact moment of stoppage stands as the final result (e.g., Beaver County Christian’s 4-1 victory over Sewickley Academy, which was called at halftime).

• Before the 1st Half Ends (39th Minute or Earlier): If lightning or severe weather halts play before the conclusion of the first half, it is an incomplete/suspended game and cannot be recorded as an official result.

The Stoppage and Restart Policy

Under PIAA and NFHS guidelines, if a match is suspended before reaching official status (under 40 minutes played):

• No Starting Over: The match does not reset to 0-0 or start over from scratch on a rescheduled date.

• Resume from Point of Interruption: Teams must pick up on the rescheduled date from the exact minute, score, roster state, and field positioning at the moment play was halted.

Lightning and Severe Weather Protocols

• The Mandatory 30-Minute Rule: If lightning is seen or thunder is heard by game officials, play must be suspended immediately, and all players, coaches, and spectators must clear the field for safe shelter.

• Clock Resets: Every single subsequent flash of lightning or clap of thunder instantly resets the mandatory 30-minute waiting clock back to zero.

• Making the Call: Game officials and school administrators evaluate field conditions (such as standing water) and facility curfews before making the final call to declare a match official or suspend it for a later date.

Points were split in Section 2-1A as Beth-Center (1-1-1, 1-0-1) and Chartiers-Houston (1-0-2, 0-0-2) played to a 1-1 draw. Parker Amos provided the scoring for Beth-Center as both squads added a point to their section tallies.

Franklin Regional 5, Kiski Area 0

In Section 1-3A action, Franklin Regional improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in section play with a convincing victory over Kiski Area (0-3-1, 0-1-1) in a match shortened by rain. Mike Hillebrand and Josh Smith led the Panthers’ attack with two goals apiece, while Rory Bayne also added a goal to seal the shutout win before officials halted play due to inclement weather.

Riverview 8, St. Joseph 0

Riverview (2-1-1, 1-0-1) delivered an offensive outburst early in the afternoon to surge past Section 3-1A rival St. Joseph (0-2, 0-1). Mason Bodnar and Chandler Yorio led the Raiders with two goals each, with Bodnar also adding an assist. Sebastian Chaparro orchestrated the offense with a goal and three assists, while Greg Morse and Dennis Underwood each contributed a goal and an assist. Beaver County Christian 4, Sewickley Academy 1

Zach Stephens powered the offense by factoring into all four goals with two tallies and two assists, while Luke Mason and Ethan Guevara each found the back of the net to secure the victory.

Butler (1-1) picked up a non-section shutout victory over Baldwin (0-2) before evening storms disrupted play across the region.
