Riveters SC vs Steel City FC Match Notes: Homegrown women’s soccer talent on display in big way

When Steel City FC host the Pittsburgh Riveters SC on Wednesday evening at Founders Field (7 p.m. kickoff), both clubs will be showcasing rosters that will include more than four dozen players from the Greater Pittsburgh region.

Focusing on Wednesday’s match-up, many players on both rosters are from in and around the Greater Pittsburgh area.

Many grew up playing with and against each other — and are mostly still competing at the college level.  There will even be a pair of siblings (Regan Reilly with Steel City and her younger sister, Robin Reilly, with the Riveters).

Look around the rosters for both teams — and you’ll see all of the Division I soccer programs in the area represented along with many former WPIAL (PIAA District 7) stars.

Playing against other clubs and teams from the Pittsburgh area is not unprecedented for many of these players — who have faced off both at the club level, in for their respective schools, from middle school to high school in the WPIAL/PIAA and now many still cross paths on the college soccer circuit.

In fact, there are some who are current and former teammates who will look on the other side of the pitch.

Here are some fun facts regarding this match-up:

• There will be a total of 49 players (Steel City 22/Riveters 27) who competed in WPIAL (PIAA District 7 High School soccer)
• WPIAL school representation is pretty spread out.  According to our calculations there are five high school soccer programs that each have three players between the two rosters (Franklin Regional, Pine-Richland, Plum, Moon, Latrobe)
• From the local Division I schools each roster has players from Pitt and Duquesne
  • Pitt — Steel City (5), Riveters (2)
  • Duquesne — Steel City (5), Riveters (1)
• Sibling Rivalry! Who will the Rielly family be rooting for? Former Latrobe High School standouts have gone separate ways with their Academy careers. Regan Rielly, currently at Bowling Green University, lines up for Steel City, and Robin Rielly, who attends WVU, wears the Riveters’ Black & Gold and previously with Riverhounds Development Academy.
• Steel City have 14 players who came up through their Academy program or still are in the Academy program, on the first team roster
• Riveters have 19 players who either trained with and/or competed with Riverhounds Development Academy program
