FINAL: Minnesota Aurora 2, Riveters SC 1,

Match Stats W League

Riveters SC’s magical second season came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday night, losing in the USL W League’s Central Conference Final, once again eliminated by perennial powerhouse Minnesota Aurora FC, 2-1.

The Aurora bookended the match with clinical moments, striking early in the 18th minute, then finding the definitive game-winner deep in second-half stoppage time from Gracie Dunaway. The heartbreaking late goal denied the two-time defending Great Forest Division champions from advancing to the National Semifinal.

The Riveters fought back with resilience. Midfield maestro Ellen Molloy found the equalizer later in the first half, and the two sides spent the next 50 minutes locked in a grueling, physical chess match with a Sunday evening sunset backdrop on the banks of the Monongahela at F.N.B. Stadium.

“It’s an incredibly tough pill to swallow when you battle that hard for 90-plus minutes and it gets decided by a fraction of a second at the very end. I couldn’t be prouder of the resilience this group showed, especially fighting back from an early deficit to level things up before half. We proved we belong on this stage,” Scott Gibson, Riveters Head Coach said after the match.

“Last year, we fell to this same team in the first round; this year, we pushed them to the absolute absolute limit in a conference final. Pre-professional soccer comes down to fine margins, and while it hurts right now, what these women built over an undefeated regular season has firmly established this club as a regional powerhouse.”

How It Happened

1st Half

Minnesota took the early lead in the 18th minute thanks to crisp combination play inside the penalty box, resulting in a clinical opening tally to put the top-seeded visitors up 1-0.

But Pittsburgh didn’t shrink from the moment. Stepping up the pressure, the Riveters pulled level before the halftime break when Ellen Molloy found space and fired home a brilliant equalizer, breathing life back into the home crowd and sending the teams into the locker rooms knotted at 1-1.

2nd Half

The second half turned into an absolute tactical war of attrition, with both sides trading defensive haymakers and searching for the killer blow.

Bella Vozar tried to ignite the Pittsburgh attack early in the half, bolting down the right wing in the 52nd minute to force a blocked cross and earn the Riveters’ first corner kick of the night.

As the intensity ratcheted up, Minnesota went to its bench first in the 56th minute, subbing on Hadli Barrera for Jeannette Fieldsend. Just minutes later, Brielle LaBerge came up massive with a perfectly timed sliding block to deny a clear scoring look for the Aurora. The ensuing Minnesota corner found the head of Ai Kitagawa, but the attempt skipped well wide of Lexi Grundler’s post.

With tired legs starting to show, Scott Gibson made his first structural adjustment in the 68th minute, bringing on Gabby Lamparty to replace Tanum Nelson in the midfield.

The Riveters continued to push the pace out wide, and in the 71st minute, Anna LaBerge isolated her defender 1-on-1 down the right flank to win a critical corner. The delivery was a beauty, flashing right to the back post where Taylor Green lunged to redirect a hard shot back across the face of the goal, but her effort agonizingly struck the side netting. Looking for a spark in the final stretch, Gibson utilized his bench depth in the 76th minute, injecting fresh legs into the frontline by bringing on Gabby Beinecke and Emily Hanrahan for Makenna Dominguez and Sabrina Bryan.

The final 15 minutes of regulation featured breathless, end-to-end drama.

In the 79th minute, Lexi Grundler came up huge, getting down to the turf brilliantly to smother a dangerous headed chance from Skye Leach. Five minutes later, Minnesota tried to strike on a rapid counter-attack as Thalia Morisi dashed down the right wing, but LaBerge tracked her all the way back in a battle of clearly exhausted legs, allowing Grundler to safely collect the loose ball.

The Riveters applied immense late pressure of their own, earning back-to-back corners in the 89th minute, but they couldn’t find the breakthrough before the fourth official signaled two minutes of stoppage time.

Then came the heartbreak. In the 92nd minute, Flavie Dubé drove down the flank and whipped a low, dangerous cross through the box, where Gracie Dunaway timed her run perfectly to redirect it home, devastating the home side and sealing the 2-1 victory for Minnesota.

“The second half was exactly what we expected—a total war of attrition between two exceptional teams trading punches. We had our moments out wide, we hit the side netting on a massive set-piece opportunity, and our backline made some heroic, game-saving blocks to keep us right there. Lexi [Grundler] was massive when she needed to be,” Gibson added.

“In games of this magnitude, the tank starts running low for both sides late in the match, and they just managed to find that one final clinical connection in stoppage time. It’s heartbreaking for the players who gave everything they had on that pitch tonight, but the foundation of this program is stronger than ever.”
