But as the undefeated division champions prepare to walk out under the lights at F.N.B. Stadium on Friday night, the objective is no longer just getting to the dance. It’s about staying a while.
The Riveters (9-0-1) kick off their 2026 playoff campaign in the second match of a high-profile Central Conference Semifinal doubleheader, playing host to Valley Division champions Racing Louisville FC at 7:00 PM.
A season ago, an inaugural summer run ended in immediate heartbreak when the Riveters were blanked 2-0 by eventual national semifinalist Minnesota Aurora FC.
One year later, armed with the conference’s No. 2 seed, home-field advantage, and a clean bill of health, Pittsburgh feels vastly better equipped to survive and advance.
“We have a lot of confidence as a club right now,” right back and franchise ironwoman Bella Vozar noted following the regular-season finale.
“I think we are more prepared than last year because we know what to expect now.”

If the 2025 Riveters playoff run was defined by late-summer roster attrition and tired legs, the 2026 campaign has been a masterclass in sustainability. Scott Gibson’s squad hasn’t just relied on a single superstar; they have overwhelmed opponents by committee.

The Riveters capped off their regular season with an emphatic 5-0 shutout of cross-town rivals Steel City FC—marking their seventh clean sheet in 10 matches.
“The chemistry that we have built as a group has continued to grow and grow, and there is some momentum that comes with that,” defender and Mars native Piper Coffield told Pittsburgh Soccer Now’s Kevin Hutchinson following the team’s division-clinching stretch.
Pittsburgh surrendered a microscopic five goals all summer, giving their goalkeeping union immense confidence heading into single-elimination play.
The anchor of that backline has been Coffield, an Indiana University standout who missed the college season with an injury but has returned to peak form this summer. Her presence alongside ironwoman Bella Vozar gives the Riveters an elite, localized backbone.
“She’s talented on the ball, she’s talented off the ball,” Coffield remarked about the squad’s defensive fluidity and ability to step up when standard starters face a quick turnaround.
“The chemistry is there.”
Gibson has an embarrassment of riches to choose from in net. Lexi Grundler anchored five of those clean sheets, while Bailey Herfurth claimed two. Should the match devolve into a high-pressure defensive siege, the Riveters can also lean on Caitlyn Thompson, who stood on her head with a franchise-record nine saves in last year’s playoff clash against Minnesota.
Scouting Racing Louisville FC
While the Riveters represent the pre-professional arm of the Riverhounds organization,
Friday’s opponent carries the badge of the region’s fiercest sporting rival. Racing Louisville FC operates directly beneath its namesake NWSL franchise and shares organizational roots with Louisville City FC—the perennial USL Championship nemesis of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
That rivalry trickles directly down to this playoff roster. Both clubs compete heavily at the youth academy level in the ECNL’s Ohio Valley Conference. For many of the collegiate and amateur players stepping onto the pitch on Friday, this is simply the latest chapter in a competitive soccer battle they have been fighting since childhood.
On paper, Louisville (6-1-2) pinched the Valley Division title from former W League champion Indy Eleven by a single point, but they land in Pittsburgh with a noticeably less dominant statistical profile than the hosts:

The Attack: Racing scored 18 goals over their nine-match schedule, led by the trio of Maci Barlow, Livvy Moore, and Cooper Stiefvater (three goals each). Moore, a standout at the University of Kansas, is the primary creator with a team-high four assists.
