Deeper Riveters set to host Racing Louisville in W League Playoff doubleheader on Friday

The road to a W League national championship officially runs through the Monongahela.

The United Soccer League officially unveiled the 16-team national postseason bracket, confirming that Pittsburgh Riveters SC has earned the Central Conference’s No. 2 seed and will host No. 3 seed Racing Louisville FC in the playoff opener this Friday, July 3, at 7:00 pm under the lights at FNB Stadium.

The high-stakes Friday doubleheader kicks off earlier in the afternoon at 3:30 PM, pitting the undefeated No. 1 overall seed and defending Central Conference champion Minnesota Aurora FC against No. 4 seed Union FC Macomb. The two semifinal winners will return to the Station Square waterfront on Sunday, July 5, at 7:00 PM to battle for the Central Conference crown and a ticket to the National Final Four.

For local soccer fans, it sets up a full weekend at FNB Stadium, as the Riverhounds SC will host Brooklyn, for a July 4 USL Championship clash.

The Quest for a First Playoff Milestone

While the Riveters wrapped up an emphatic 9–0–1 regular season by throttling cross-town rivals Steel City FC 5–0 over the weekend, the mood around the club is entirely focused on a piece of unfinished business: securing the first postseason victory in franchise history.

Last summer, the Riveters put together a brilliant inaugural campaign only to suffer immediate heartbreak in a hard-fought 2–0 semifinal defeat at the hands of Minnesota Aurora.

This year, the objective has shifted.

“We have a lot of confidence as a club right now,” Bella Vozar, defender and franchise ironwoman said following the regular-season finale.

“We have a lot of trust in each other. That will take us a long way. I think we are more prepared than last year because we know what to expect now.”

Built to Last: The Depth Factor

The biggest difference between the 2025 squad and this undefeated 2026 juggernaut boils down to one word: sustainability.

Last summer, as the calendar flipped to July, the Riveters found themselves vulnerable. Due to various summer commitments, academy transitions, and roster attrition, the squad was actively losing key contributors right when the competitive stakes reached their peak.

The bench wore thin, and it caught up to them against a clinical Minnesota side.

Head Coach Scott Gibson and the front office explicitly built this year’s roster to withstand a deep July run. They didn’t just recruit a starting eleven; they assembled a multi-headed monster.

The numbers back it up.

The Riveters enter the weekend with a staggering 17 different goal-scorers on their stat sheet this summer. When key starters need a breather or tactical adjustments arise, the drop-off simply doesn’t exist. From veteran finisher Sabrina Bryan to international anchors like Irish midfielder Ellen Molloy and the absolute durability of collegiate stars like Lola Abraham, Piper Coffield, and Bella Vozar, this group is physically and tactically built for the tournament grind.

“This is the best, most talented team I’ve been on,” Vozar added.

“This is something I am grateful for, with a group of girls that not only want to win, but want to be the best.”

ScoutING The Opponents

To get that elusive first playoff victory, the Riveters will have to solve a formidable, playoff-debuting Racing Louisville FC (6-1-2) squad. Louisville enters the tournament with serious momentum after narrowly edging out regional powerhouse Indy Eleven by a single point to claim the Valley Division crown.

Should Pittsburgh advance past the Louisville hurdle, a potential rematch with their nemesis looms on Sunday. Great Lakes Division champion Union FC Macomb (7-2-1) makes its playoff debut in the early match against a relentless Minnesota Aurora FC (12-0-0) squad. While the Aurora have reached the W League playoffs in all five seasons of their existence, the pre-professional giants are still hungrily chasing their first elusive national title.
