Bentworth boys, South Fayette and Burrell girls advance to PIAA soccer championship

Three WPIAL (District 7) schools Bentworth (Boys Class 1A), South Fayette (Girls 3A) and Burrell (Girls Class 2A) will be moving on to the PIAA Soccer Championship games this coming weekend as each team pulled out wins in the state playoffs on Tuesday night.

Also on Tuesday in the other matches featuring area schools, North Allegheny (Girls 4A), Springdale (Girls 1A), Allderdice (Boys 3A) and Deer Lakes (Boys 2A) each came up short in its bids to get to the State Finals.

Bentworth tops OLSH, 2-1, in WPIAL Finals rematch

Facing off the second time in less than two weeks, the two best Class 1A boys programs in the WPIAL battled in a match that had various momentum swings with each team getting on the front foot.

A strong finish propelled the three-time WPIAL champs, Bentworth to a 2-1 win that put the Washington County school back in the PIAA Championship game for the second year in a row.

Even in a match where OLSH started off with more time on the ball and controlling play, Bearcats benefitted from a first half own goal.

Early in the second half, after OLSH had kept the WPIAL’s leading scorer Ryan Moessner in check for long stretches, the Bearcats turned to Moessner’s younger sibling, Adam.

The sophomore forward fired a left-footed shot past OLSH keeper Patrick Altmar for his 50th goal of the year — now trailing his big brother by six goals for the season.

OLSH proved to be a tough out — eventually finding a goal in the late stages after a scramble in the box, with freshman Hunter Smith cutting the lead in half.

The final moments of the match, with OLSH pushing numbers forward trying to get the equalizer, saw a wild, back-and-forth fury with both sides exchanging chances, but the Bearcats escaping its rematch with the Chargers with a berth in the Championship game.

Bentworth will now face Delco Christian in the Final, to be played on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Northeastern High School.

In last year’s final, Bentworth fall short, losing to Lancaster Mennonite, 1-0.

South Fayette Girls Roll to 6-1 Win over Dubois

On Saturday, South Fayette girls were trailing 3-0.

And that’s when the Lions began to roar — and since that moment — have scored 10 goals and now find themselves in the PIAA Championship game for the first time in school history.

Saturday’s incredible comeback came when Gabby Beinecke scored twice in a three-minute stretch and South Fayette’s deficit became one in the 59th minute.

Emma Ferrari had the equalizer in the 71st minute, then Lily Chiappetta had the game-winner in Extra Time.

The momentum from Saturday’s win clearly carried over into Tuesday night’s semifinal against a Dubois squad that beat WPIAL champs, Fox Chapel, 3-1, on Saturday.

On Tuesday, it was Mia Deramo who led the charge, picking up a brace and adding two assists.

Quinn Miller, Silvi Rossi, Nora Davidovich and Emma Ferrari also scored for the Lions (21-2-1), who will take on District 1 champ Radnor (20-4) in the finals at 1 p.m. Saturday at Northeastern High School in Manchester.

Fourth Time is the Charm for Burrell

Goals from Katie Koehler and Makiah Buchak lifted Burrell past section rival Freeport, 2-1, at Fox Chapel High School on Tuesday night in the fourth meeting between the schools this season.

The first two goals of the match came in a flurry in the first half.

First, Koehler converted a header in a crowded box to put the Bucs up, 1-0.

But a quick response came from the WPIAL champs, when all-WPIAL selection and Riverhounds Academy standout Cam Woods fired one in from distance to level the match.

As things tightened up in the match, Burrell would find the game-winner in the second half when Kendall Coury sent a well-placed ball into the box that found Buchak there to hit it home — and send the Bucs past their section rival and into the State Championship game.

This will be Burrell’s first-ever PIAA Girls Soccer state title appearance as they will take on Archbishop Woods on Friday at 7 p.m. at Northeastern High School.
