Where does Trevor Amann’s historic blitz rank among greatest individual performances in Riverhounds history?

After an intense, high-drama week that featured a long road trip to Florida humidity, smoky skies, and a rare Saturday noon kickoff on national television, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC finally have something they haven’t seen in a while: a completely normal week of match preparation.

Coming off a monumental 3-1 victory over Louisville City FC that officially shattered the decade-long F.N.B. Stadium curse in which forward Trevor Amann scored three goals in less than four minutes shortly after the second half began, Head Coach Rob Vincent’s squad can take a breath. The win pushed Pittsburgh to the official midpoint of the USL Championship season with a firm sense of identity and momentum — and a record (7W-6L-2D, 23 points) that puts the defending USL Championship title holders in contention for another top four finish in the Eastern Conference standings.

Now, the focus shifts to a marquee matchup this Saturday: welcoming Rhode Island FC to Highmark Stadium for the first time since last autumn’s Eastern Conference Final.

Adding even more intrigue to the fixture, it marks the first time Hounds star striker Albert Dikwa will face his former club and teammates since returning to Pittsburgh.  PSN’s Kevin Hutchinson was at Hounds’ training on Tuesday, and has more from Dikwa, Head Coach Rob Vincent and goalkeeper Nico Campuzano, who’s native country of Spain can now boast being World Champions once again.

But before we fully dive into Rhode Island week, the nature of Saturday’s victory demands a moment of historical reflection.

Trevor Amann’s breathtaking 3-minute and 27-second hat trick didn’t just break Louisville—it shattered the all-time USL Championship record for the fastest hat trick in league history.

On Saturday, it was a unique day for a number of reasons, but instead of taking our usual positions in the press box situated above the main grandstand, our mostly usual media contigient were moved over to the Suites on the West end of  F.N.B. Stadium, where we witnessed right below — one of the most impressive feats ever by a Riverhounds player in a single game.   i

It was exciting to have team coverage on Saturday, from Kevin Hutchinson capturing post match reaction, Ed Thompson’s dazzling photos and I had the opportunity to put it all into perspective shortly after the match.

As a few days have passed, it got me thinking back over the last 13 years of covering this club (dating back to 2013) — that I’ve covered some impressive individual performances that helped elevate the Riverhounds.

Still, what Amann did in a short period of time may be tough to top, but there are a lot of great moments that Pittsburgh Riverhounds have seen in the past 13 years.

In that vein, where does Amann’s four-minute blitz rank among the single most impressive individual performances in modern Riverhounds history?

Here is my breakdown of the top single-game masterclasses in recent club lore—and the bar Amann just cleared.

The Multi-Goal Outbursts & Record-Shatterers

In total, there have now been 14 hat tricks recorded by Riverhounds players.  Trevor Amann not only shattered the record for the fastest hat trick in team history, he also shattered the league record by a healthy margin and is among the fastest ever in professional soccer’s recent history.

Trevor Amann vs. Louisville City FC (July 18, 2026)

• The Statline: 3 goals in 3 minutes, 27 seconds.

• The Context: The Hounds were desperate to put poor second-half performances in their most recent league matches, both resulting in losses to expansion sides Brooklyn and Jacksonville. Head Coach Rob Vincent, who will appear multiple times in this write-up, emplored his team to find a solution and seize control of the match at the start of the second 45 minutes.  Sure enough, Amann delivered the fastest hat trick in USL Championship history to bury bitter rival LouCity and end a 10-year home winless drought against the visitors.

Neco Brett vs. Birmingham Legion FC (2019 USL Championship Quarterfinals)

• The Statline: 4 goals in a 7-0 blowout.

• The Context: In one of the most dominant individual playoff performances the league has ever seen, the former Robert Morris star completed a first-half hat trick in just 34 minutes, adding a fourth in the second half to cap off a postseason rout.

Rob Vincent vs. NY Red Bulls II (2015)

• The Statline: 3 goals, complete midfield dominance.

• The Context: Before he was leading the Hounds from the technical area, Rob Vincent was putting up one of the most dominant individual seasons in USL history. His 2015 season was stuff of legend. It may be hard to pinpoint one performance that stood out, but the Liverpool, England native and former Charleston University standout’s hat trick against NYRBII highlighted a campaign where he regularly took over matches from his new attacking midfield role under Head Coach Mark Steffens.

Jose Angulo vs. Real Salt Lake II  (2014)

• The Statline: Unique all three Penalty Kick conversions

• The Context: During his 2013 MVP campaign, Angulo was lethal. In 2014, he struggled early in the season, but his hat trick in Salt Lake City showcased an absolute ice in his veins and carried the Hounds to an impressive late season playoff push that seemed all but lost earlier that year.

Kevin Kerr & Rob Vincent vs. Harrisburg City Islanders (March 28, 2015 — 5-2 Win)

• The Statline: Kerr (3 goals / Hat Trick) | Vincent (2 goals / Brace)

• The Context: On a freezing opening night at Highmark Stadium, Kerr and Vincent combined for all five goals to ignite the 2015 season. Kerr registered the first hat trick in Highmark Stadium history, while Vincent opened and closed the scoring. The 5-2 rout marked the first time the Hounds scored five goals in a single match at Highmark Stadium and officially kicked off one of the most dynamic attacking duos in club lore.

Albert Dikwa — March 18, 2023 vs. Memphis 901 FC (3-1 win) at AutoZone Park

In the second game of the 2023 season, Dikwa showed the form that would win him Most Outstanding Player and the Golden Boot at year’s end. The No. 2 goalscorer in team history, Dikwa’s lone hat trick was the first to come on the road in nine years and — for what it’s worth — the only one to come on a converted baseball field.  Dikwa’s 2023 campaign was so impressive that there were many huge moments where he put the team on his back especially down the stretch of the season, but this is the one that really got him going.

Playoff Heroics & “Cup-Set” Legends

Eric Dick vs. FC Tulsa (2025 USL Championship Final)

• The Statline: 120-minute shutout, 5 saves, championship-winning PK save.

• The Context: Dick’s entire 2025 playoff run was legendary, but capping it off with an extra-time masterclass and saving Stefan Lukic’s penalty in the shootout to earn USL Championship Final MVP honors delivered the club’s first league title.

• While we’re on the topic of goalkeepers standing on their heads, the Hounds have been so good with team defending in the recent modern era, but the one night during this era where they needed a goal keeper to rescue them came in Dick’s first season, when he tied the club record with eight saves in a 1-0 win at Sacramento, when the club needed a big lift and inspiration to turn the season in the right direction as they were well below the playoff line.  Eventually they would get over the playoff line and Dick would win the USL Championship’s 2024 Gold Glove Award.  Dick’s performance was only matched by Mauricio Vargas at FC Cincinnati (May 14, 2016). Under heavy siege in front of a hostile road crowd of over 25,000 fans in Cincinnati, Vargas made eight stops to keep the Hounds within striking distance.

Edward Kizza & Jahmali Waite vs. Birmingham Legion FC (2022 Playoffs)

• The Statline: Kizza (2 goals off the bench + PK conversion) / Waite (Shootout heroics).

• The Context: The ultimate “heat check” performance. Kizza came off the bench to score an 89th-minute equalizer, a 116th-minute equalizer in extra time, and the deciding penalty kick. Meanwhile, Waite stood on his head across 120 minutes and made crucial stops in the shootout to secure Pittsburgh’s first-ever postseason PK victory.

Robbie Mertz vs. Rhode Island FC (2025 Eastern Conference Final)

• The Statline: Game-winning goal, midfield control.

• The Context: With Head Coach Rob Vincent calling pre-match for someone to step up in a defining moment, the Pittsburgh native delivered a brilliant second-half strike to send the Hounds to the league final. How exhilarating was this legendary performance and accomplishment, Mertz practically collapsed in the locker room after the match and had to be hospitalized overnight.

Danny Griffin vs. New England Revolution (2023 U.S. Open Cup)

• The Statline: 1 goal, complete engine-room performance.

• The Context: Fresh off returning to Pittsburgh following a brief stint with Huntsville, Griffin picked up right where he left off, scoring the solitary goal to eliminate MLS side New England Revolution in a memorable Open Cup “Cup-Set.”

Kenardo Forbes becomes the USL Championship’s Assist King

It’s probably hard to pinpoint one truly standout performance from a player who has been voted unanimously by PSN’s contributors when celebrating as the top Riverhound during the modern (new Stadium) era, Kenardo Forbes.  Kenny was known for his steady at the wheel leadership, consistency and selfless play. Though he didn’t score a lot of goals, were some timely winners (the game-winner to lead Hounds to US Open Cup win vs Indy Eleven in 2019 stands out in a rare time when he came off the bench).

However, if there is one match that encapsulated Forbes’ ability to completely dismantle an opponent with his vision, it was on August 2020 night at FNB Stadium when he picked apart Philadelphia Union II in a 4-0 win.

• The Staking of the Crown: Entering the match trailing Maikel Chang by one for the USL Championship’s all-time assist record, Forbes didn’t just break the record—he shattered it in a single half of football.

• The Performance: In the 22nd minute, he served up a trademark, inch-perfect cross for Steevan Dos Santos to tie the record. Just 14 minutes later, he dropped a dime off a corner kick to Thomas Vancaeyezeele to officially become the all-time assist king in USL Championship history (his 38th career league assist).

• Why It’s Iconic: He dictated every single phase of play from central midfield, proving that an orchestrator’s vision can be just as lethal as a striker’s goal blitz.  

🔥 Legendary Rivalry & “Miracle on the Mon” Nights

Lebo Moloto & Danny Earls vs. Harrisburg City Islanders (2015 “Miracle on the Mon”)

• The Statline: Moloto (3 assists – Club Record) / Earls (2 goals, including a 90′ banger).

• The Context: While Kevin Kerr and Rob Vincent scored the dramatic late goals in the famous 6-5 comeback, Moloto was the maestro setting a club record with three assists. Unsung hero Danny Earls buried a rebound off a missed PK in the 81st minute and unleashed an unrecorded (on video) 30-yard laser in the 90th minute to make the impossible comeback viable.
