Instant Recap
With the NFL Draft winding down across the Mon, the Riverhounds put on a show of their own on Saturday night, opening their 2026 USL Cup campaign with a total domination of USL League One’s Greenville Triumph by a comfortable 3-0 scoreline.
Aiming to avenge their poor 2025 showing in the competition – which saw them crash out of the group stages – the first half was all Riverhounds from the opening whistle and it wouldn’t take long before that showed on the scoreboard.
In just the eighth minute, Eliot Goldthorp would find himself in open space on the left wing and loop a cross into the back post where Robbie Mertz was lurking unmarked. Mertz cleverly looped a header back across goal where Trevor Amann was standing all alone on the goal line, as he simply tapped it in with his chest for the easiest goal of his life to give the hosts a rapid lead.
Amann would prove dangerous throughout the first half. In the 21st minute, Amann’s pressure would force a bad turnover from the Triumph goalkeeper, giving Danny Griffin a clear shot at net from just outside the box – barely parried away by a great recovery from Greenville’s keeper. Amann would also draw what at first appeared to be a DOGSO foul just beyond the half-hour mark, but Greenville’s defense was bailed out by the offsides flag.
The Hounds would have another spectacular chance just moments later, as a loose ball in the box following a corner was chopped at by a combination of Mertz, Amann, and others, and was barely kept out of the net by a tremendous goal-line clearance from Greenville’s Daniel Wu, who deflected the ball off his own crossbar to save his side.
Unfortunately for the Triumph, the Hounds would make amends in short order. In the 42nd minute, Mertz again proved instrumental as he broke Amann free on the right wing with a clever ball from midfield. Amann would return it to him centrally, and Mertz would fire a tough shot that Greenville’s keeper was just able to parry. Unluckily for him, Max Viera was ready to pounce on the rebound and fire it in for his first professional goal, doubling the Hounds lead just before the halftime whistle.
The Hounds would maintain full control in the second half, keeping the pressure on as they sought a third to secure their position – and much like the first half, they wouldn’t wait long. After a brilliant sequence of passing, Jackson Walti put a pinpoint cross into the back post from the right wing. Waiting for it on the other end was Trevor Amann, who directed an absolutely brilliant diving header beyond the keeper and into the net for his second goal of the evening in spectacular fashion.
He’d nearly complete his hat trick just minutes later, as another brilliant sequence of rapid-fire passing around the Greenville fox freed up Amann to finish off an easy one-on-one with the keeper, but the Triumph were saved by the flag as he was whistled offsides. Eliot Goldthorp would chime in with a chance shortly thereafter, but his effort from the right wing was parried away to safety.
The final highlight of the evening for the Hounds was the entry of 17-year-old Warren Agostoni, as the Riverhounds Development Academy product and Latrobe, PA native took the field to replace Eliot Goldthorp in the 83rd minute with the game well in-hand. He’d help the hosts see out the final ten minutes as the Hounds secured their 3-0 victory.
The result leaves the Hounds atop Group 6 after the first set of matches, level on points with Charleston and Charlotte but ahead on goal differential. Their next USL Cup fixture will be on May 15th against the Charlotte Independence on the road. The Hounds will generally return to action in a week’s time as they host Phoenix Rising in USL Championship play on May 2nd.

72′ – A pair of subs now for the Hounds. Off come Mertz and Bassett. In their place come Bradley Sample and Charles Ahl to see this one out.

46′ – Some subs from both sides for the second half. For the Hounds side, it’s Mikoy off and replaced by Illal Osumanu. We’re back underway at FNB with the Hounds up 2-0 over Greenville in their USL Cup opener.
Halftime – Riverhounds 2-0 Greenville. Robbie Mertz is flying all over the place, one assist on the goal by Trevor Amann and his saved shot sets up the second from Max Viera. The hosts are cruising so far tonight, it’s been all Hounds.
42′ – GOAL, RIVERHOUNDS! A rapid Hounds counter-attack is lead by Mertz, who shuttles the ball out to Amann, who then feeds it back centrally to Mertz. The latter’s shot is saved, but the rebound is put in by Max Viera to double the Hounds’ lead!
39′ – Another dangerous cross to the back post earns the Hounds a corner. The ball bounces around the box and nearly impossibly doesn’t go in! Greenville had a defender make a spectacular goal-line clearance off his own crossbar! Absolutely crazy the Hounds don’t score there!
36′ – Wow, extremely lucky break there for Greenville. Trevor Amann appeared to be in behind the defense and the victim of a DOGSO foul, but he must have been a step or two offsides as the flag comes up and bails the visitors out.
26′ – And now a yellow card for a hard foul by Greenville’s Rodrigo Robles on Danny Griffin near midfield, we’re level on discipline now.
25′ – First shot on-target of the night for Greenville, as Ivan Agyaakwah takes a long-distance effort, but it’s an easy catch for Mike Sheridan for his first Hounds save.
21′ – Think it was Trevor Amann there who forced a GK turnover and Danny Griffin has a shot on-target and desperately saved by the Triumph keeper! Close!
14′ – The first yellow card of the game is issued to the Riverhounds’ Owen Mikoy for a late challenge in the midfield after a loose touch on his part. Play is chaotic and end-to-end so far.
8′ – GOAL, RIVERHOUNDS! A brilliant cross from the left wing off the foot of Eliot Goldthorp finds Robbie Mertz at the back post, who heads it across the face of goal to Trevor Amann for the easiest tap-in off his chest he’ll ever have with the open net. The hosts lead 1-0 early!
6′ – A looping cross into the box is met by the head of Owen Mikoy high in the air, who re-directs it across goal effectively, but just beyond the far post.

0′ – The Riverhounds host the Greenville Triumph for the first-ever meeting between the two sides to open up USL Cup Group 6 play for the 2026 edition of the competition. The Hounds are debuting their chromatic third kits, a tribute to the Andy Warhol bridge in classic Warhol pop art style.
