Coming off Wednesday’s grueling and emotional 2-0 Derby victory over Riverhounds Two, the defending Great Forest Division champions leaned heavily on their depth and a resolute defensive block to survive the stifling afternoon heat. The crucial home victory keeps Steel City FC (2-0-1) unbeaten on the season, securing a vital three points in a league without playoffs where every single result dictates the title race.
“Was a really tough week with a holiday, two short preps, and two difficult matches, so to come through it with six points is a fantastic effort by the boys and staff,” Steel City Head Coach Dan Brower said post-match.
The defining moment of the afternoon belonged to second-half substitute Nicholas Niebauer, who provided the definitive clinical touch to shatter a stubborn, scoreless deadlock late in the match. While Niebauer provided the heroics on the frontline, the afternoon was securely anchored by yet another masterful, shutout performance from Robert Morris University goalkeeper Josh Lane. Lane and his backline weathered a heavy, late rotation of attacking reinforcements from Akron City FC (0-2-1) to preserve the clean sheet, sealing a perfect six-point week for the club.
How it Happened: First Half
The opening 45 minutes unfolded as a physical, deliberate chess match, with both squads spending the early stretches feeling each other out on the grass. Coming off the emotional highs and short rest of Wednesday’s Derby win, Steel City FC found themselves locked in a tight, defensive battle against a disciplined and organized Akron City FC unit.
“Not the start we wanted—inviting too much pressure,” Brower noted of the early going. “We’ll need to be more responsible and play with a speed that challenges our opponent and us. Lesson learned.”
As the half progressed, the match began to open up slightly through set-piece opportunities and rising physical tension. In the 33rd minute, the physical nature of the clash resulted in the game’s first booking, with Akron City’s Dino Stavros being assessed a yellow card. Akron City weaponized their set-pieces late in the half to test the hosts, earning corners from Lazar Ivanis and Londen Sears.
However, Steel City began finding their footing as the intermission approached. “We were making good strides in the last periods of the half with some quicker passing, combinations, and more chances created,” Brower observed. “But we still needed to ask more questions.”
Grinding it Out: Second Half
With the afternoon heat taking a physical toll and needing a spark, Brower didn’t wait long to utilize his bench.
“We made a few changes at half—earlier than expected—and the guys who came off the bench gave us the stability, composure, and leadership we were looking for,” Brower explained.
Akron City also attempted to ring the changes to find an edge, executing a series of substitutions that saw Gianni Marella, Grant Blake, Tristan Wilson, Kenny-Ali Hakazimana, and Luis Felipe Santos enter the pitch over the course of the half. Yet, it was Steel City’s depth that ultimately dictated the destiny of the match, culminating in a brilliant team goal cooked up entirely by the reserves.
Substitute Nicholas Niebauer—the Butler High School and Steel City Academy product—found the long-awaited breakthrough late in the match, pouncing on an opening in the final third to execute a clinical finish past the Akron keeper.
“We pushed and got the deserved goal,” Brower said. “I think a goal that involved at least four of our guys who came off the bench. Brilliant!”
Reflecting on the grueling, physical nature of the breakthrough, Niebauer emphasized how much the team had to dig deep to adapt to a stubborn Akron defensive look. “It took a while, but we found the winning goal,” Niebauer said. “They were dropping off a lot, and it was tough to break through. But we just kept moving the ball, kept the tempo high, and eventually, the opportunity came. I was just happy to be in the right spot to help the boys get the three points.”
Stunned by the late goal, Akron City threw everything forward in the final ten minutes, subbing Chris Philibin onto the pitch for a final attacking push. However, Josh Lane once again stood like a wall in the Steel City net, commanding his crowded penalty area and locking down his second clean sheet of the week to ensure the hard-fought 1-0 victory held until the final whistle.
