Here is the mid-season breakdown for WPIAL Girls Soccer, featuring updated standings through the first half of section play and PSN’s initial projections for the 2026 postseason brackets across all four classifications!

There’s a lot of storylines and interesting notes we pulled from our midseason overview of standings:

Most coaches in Class 4A continue to share that they believe that there’s a legit chance any one of the top eight to 10 teams could make it to FNB Stadium for the WPIAL final. From some early season eyeball tests and looking at the results — along with the addition of Fox Chapel to the fold — they are spot on.
Section 2-2A Super-Trio: Burrell (8-0-4), Freeport (7-1-1), and North Catholic (5-0-1) are separated by razor-thin margins. Their October rematches will directly determine who claims top-4 overall seeding in 2A.
The Draw Dynamic in 3A Section 2: Montour (3-0-2), South Fayette (5-1-4), and West Allegheny (5-1-4) have combined for 10 regulation draws through the first half. The new no-overtime rule certainly a factor in keeping all three tied virtually neck-and-neck at the top of the table.
1A Goal Explosion: Class 1A section leaders (Sewickley, Bentworth, Winchester Thurston, and Riverview) are averaging over 6.0 goals per game, setting up high-octane matchups when the bracket locks in October!

PSN’s Mid-Season Seeding Projections (WPIAL Class 4A)

Under the 12-team Class 4A structure, the top four teams in each section qualify for the postseason, with the top four overall seeds earning a First Round Bye into the WPIAL Quarterfinals.

Top 4 Seeds (First Round Byes)

Peters Township Indians (Section 2 Leader) — Unbeaten at 8-0-1 overall with a microscopic 0.22 GAA (only 2 goals allowed all season). Also beat defending 3A champs, 3-1 to open the season.
Fox Chapel Foxes (Section 1 Leader) — Perfect 5-0-0 section mark and a clean 0.16 GAA (1 goal allowed overall). Only loss came to North Allegheny in season opener.
North Allegheny Tigers (Section 3 Leader) — Pacing Section 3 at 4-0-0 with 8-2-1 overall resume against an elite non-section schedule.
Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils (Section 2 Runner-up) — Margins are razor thin for this spot. Outstanding 7-1-1 overall profile, currently narrowly over Seneca Valley, Canon-McMillan, Norwin based on higher overall win percentage and section points.

Top 4 Seeds (Section Leaders)

Penn-Trafford Warriors (Section 4 Leader) — 5-1-3 overall, holding down the top spot in a stacked Section 4. Opened the season with 3-1 non-section win vs Shaler.
Shaler Titans (Section 1 Leader) — Rolling at 7-1-0 overall with 5-0-0 section sweep through the first turn. Out of section wins include vs Moon, North Hills.
Montour Spartans (Section 2 Leader) — Pacing Section 2 at 3-0-2 with a deep 6-1-2 overall resume. What a race in Section 2, where the top three (Montour along with defending champs South Fayette and West Allegheny) remain unbeaten and they’ve all tied each other.
Belle Vernon Leopards (Section 3 Leader) — 5-1-3 overall, commanding Section 3 with 38 goals scored.

Top 4 Seeds (Section Leaders)

South Park Eagles (Section 1 Leader) — Undefeated 10-0-0 overall, 44 goals scored, only 1 goal allowed all season. Out of section wins include all shutouts of Wheeling CC, McDowell, Elizabeth Forward and Mt. Pleasant.
Yough Cougars (Section 4 Leader) — Perfect 8-0-0 overall mark, boasting a massive +55 goal differential (56 GF, 1 GA). Both non-section wins stepped up in class (Highlands and Hempfield)
Burrell Buccaneers (Section 2 Leader) — Last year’s state runner-up are unbeaten 8-0-4 overall. Much like Class 3A, Section 2, they’re holding the top spot in the loaded Section 2 triad, but Freeport and North Catholic are right in the mix and also unbeaten in section! Impressive non-section results including beating 3A Trinity, Franklin Regional and tied Plum, and also beat 1A Winchester Thurston.
Freeport (Sec 2 Runner-up, 7-1-1) Could make a case for a few other teams here but the defending WPIAL champs are right there step for step with Burrell. Out of section/conference they also have wins over 4A Butler, 3A Thomas Jefferson, loss to 3A Hampton plus a win vs Mt. Pleasant. Two matches still left vs North Catholic and rematch vs Burrell will determine a lot.

Top 4 Seeds (Section Leaders)

Sewickley Academy Panthers (Section 1 Leader) — 8-0-0 overall, electric attack averaging 7.62 goals per match (61 GF, 8 GA). Out of section the 2025 Class 1A Runner-Up have wins against The Kiski School (5-1), Deer Lakes (8-3) and Riverside (3-0).
Bentworth Bearcats (Section 2 Leader) — Perfect 8-0-0 overall record with dominant defense (43 GF, 4 GA). The defending champs are still showing they’re the class of Section 2 though they’re getting a challenge from Brownsville this year (Bearcats won last week, 2-1). Will now have a good step-up in competition this week when they take on Belle Vernon.
Winchester Thurston Bears (Section 3 Leader) — 9-1-0 overall with 52 goals scored. The Bears have stepped up in competition too, and are without a loss vs Class 1A competition.
Riverview Raiders (Section 4 Leader) — Unbeaten 7-0-0 overall mark, controlling Section 4 thanks to a 2-1 win last week vs Allegheny Valley rival Springdale.
