GIRLS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Izzy Laurita

Belle Vernon, Sophomore

Laurita has been absolutely destroying defenses in her section with 12 goals in last three games.

She scored four goals in last week’s win to clinch a section title. For the year, Laurita has accumulated an impressive 29 goals and 19 assists. Laurita is a sophomore at Belle Vernon Area High School and plays for the Riverhounds Academy 03 team.

The Lady Leps are currently 10-2 overall and 9-0 in their section. Against Ringgold on Monday, she added to her impressive totals with three goals and an assist in a 4-0 win.

BOYS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jake Sepesky

Belle Vernon, senior

In early September, Jake suffered a head injury in a match, and for a while it seemed unlikely that he’d ever set foot on a soccer field again.

The injury occurred in BVA’s section opener against Ringgold, as Sepesky collided head-to-head with Ringgold senior Jeff Soles.

Initially, it was thought Sepesky had a concussion, but it was later discovered the forward had a fractured skull. As a result of the injury, Sepesky had reconstructive surgery on the front part of his skull.

Fast-forward more than a month later, on Tuesday night, and on Senior Night at Belle Vernon, Jake was not only introduced as one of the 11 starters, but he also played for about two minutes at the start of the match.  Sepesky was subbed out and then subbed back in with about three minutes left in the game, then came off with all seniors with about two minutes left in the game.

Jake’s recovery is going well, he’s back in school with no long term restrictions and no issues, hoping to be fully cleared for basketball season. According to Coach Rob Meile, Jake and his family are very grateful for all the support he was given when he was first injured,  as it really meant a lot during that time of uncertainty.
