Match Previews:

Class 4A — Section 2 — Upper St Clair vs Peters Township

When these two clash it’s always a tight, intense battle, with two coaches who have been doing battle in this series for decades (yes that’s plural) — as Uwe Schneider’s been at the helm of USC boys squad since 2002, and Bobby Dyer at Peters has been around just as long.  And guess what — both teams are unbeaten in section play heading into this contest, which is no surprise if you know the pedigree of these programs.  And once again as they meet for the first time this season, this should be another intense, close contest.  Peters (6-1-1, 3-0-0 in section) has just one loss this season, coming out of section to Plum, while Upper St Clair (4-2-1, 3-0-0 in section) had two close losses to two Section 3’s perennial contenders (North Allegheny and Seneca Valley) and drew Plum in the first weekend.

Both teams have been solid in defending in the run of play this season (USC has five goals allowed and Peters has allowed three), so don’t be surprised that once again, scanning through some of the highlights of their matches, that Peters is very good at converting on chances from set pieces this season– one of the trademarks under Dyer.

The Indians rely on a deep roster, led by seniors Parker Weiss, Caden Hensler and Jeven Kelly.

Upper St Clair midfielder Liam Burlovic was an all-WPIAL selection a year ago. Through its first three section matches, the Panthers have scored eight goals, but now will be put to the test against the Indians, who were pushed to extra time vs Mt. Lebanon (2-1) and outlasted Canon-McMillan, 3-1.

Class 2A — Avonworth vs Central Valley

Another showdown between two top teams in the same section comes when Avonworth face the upstarts from Central Valley, who are unbeaten (7-0-0, 5-0-0 in section).  At the JRK Memorial Classic, we saw CV walk away with two really impressive wins to the start the season (vs Winchester Thurston and Pine-Richland), and have since rolled through section competition to the tune of a +26 goal differential.

Avonworth (6-1-0, 6-0-0 in section) has only loss this season came when playing one of the best teams in all classifications this early season, Moon, in 4-3 shootout.  This should be a great match up between two teams with contrasting styles.  The ‘Lopes are potent scoring unit, while Central Valley, with young head coach Jack Shearer, who excelled in his career as a defender, will have his team ready to battle. turning some heads with an impressive 3-0 win vs defending section champs and WPIAL runner-up, Quaker Valley.  In their most impressive win vs one of WPIAL soccer’s bluebloods and perennial section forerunners, Quaker Valley, senior Abdul Basit came through with a hat trick to lead the way for Avonworth.
