We are now one week away from playoff brackets being revealed and the end of the regular season, so teams playing on Thursday will be looking to finish strong, as some section titles and playoff spots are still on the line.

What matches have the most on the line?   Check out “What’s At Stake”  each Classification’s schedule below to see which teams have clinched playoff and section titles — and which teams are still battling.

THURSDAY’S SCHEDULE

Class 4A — What’s at Stake: 

Section 1 —

  • All playoff spots are secured. Plum (9-0 in section) can clinch Section title with win or draw vs Norwin (8-1).
  • Central Catholic (3-5 in section) holds 4th place edge over Hempfield (2-7 in section) having won both matches between the schools.

Section 2 —

  • Peters Township clinched section title
  • All playoff spots have been secured.

Section 3 —

  • With a win or tie in its final section match, North Allegheny clinches section title
  • Fox Chapel has an extra match remaining, vs North Hills (10/14), thus could share Section title with North Allegheny if the Foxes can win its last two matches starting tonight.
  • North Allegheny won the first match between the two schools, 1-0, in September.
  • North Hills (4-4 in section) needs another win in its last two to secure a spot in the playoffs, or they could end up in a tie with Pine-Richland for fourth.
  • North Hills already beat Seneca Valley, but now they face a Seneca Valley team that has been playing much better until a loss to North Allegheny this week.
  • Pine-Richland faces Butler on Friday.

 

Class 3A — What’s at Stake: 

Section 1 —

  • Indiana (8-2-0), Mars (7-1-2) and Hampton (6-1-3) all have two matches left in the race for the Section title.
  • Armstrong (5-5) and Knoch (4-6) are in a battle for the fourth and final playoff spot with two matches remaining.

Section 2 —

  • Bethel Park (10-2) and Thomas Jefferson (9-1-2) each have two matches left to decide the Section title
  • Trinity (8-3-1), Ringgold (7-3-1) and South Fayette (7-5-0) are all still alive for the last two playoff spots.

Section 3 —

  • With 1-0 win vs Franklin Regional, Latrobe (10-0) clinched the Section title
  • ** Keep in mind all of the previous matches that included Allderdice now don’t count in the standings

WPIAL boots City Schools’ Allderdice and Obama Academy soccer teams, to be in compliance with PIAA’s 2023 ruling

  • With two games to go, Belle Vernon (3-5) has the inside track to the last playoff spot now, following its 2-1 win vs West Mifflin (2-6) on Tuesday

Section 4 —

  • Moon remains unbeaten and untied in what has been an impressive campaign to this point, with the inside track to the No. 1 overall seeding in the 3A WPIAL playoffs.
  • The remaining teams in 2nd – 4th place have secured playoff spots: West Allegheny, Chartiers Valley and Montour.

Class 2A – What’s at Stake

Section 1 —

  • With two matches to go, Deer Lakes (11-1) holds the inside track to Section title having beaten North Catholic (10-2) both times they’ve met.
  • Burrell (6-6) and Freeport (4-5-2) are battling for the last playoff spot — and will face each other next Tuesday in the finale for both teams.  Freeport may need an upset of Deer Lakes tonight though to have a fighting chance next week.

Section 2 —

  • Avonworth (13-1-1) pulled ahead by a half game with a close Extra Time win vs Central Valley (11-3-0) on Tuesday.   The Lopes will finish section play Thursday vs Beaver Area, while Quaker Valley (12-1-1) does have an extra game at hand can still clinch a share of the Section title by winning out (Thursday vs Ellwood City / next Tuesday vs Central Valley)
  • Beaver Area (8-5) has the edge over Hopewell, but Hopewell can win its last two and Beaver loses, Hopewell can secure the last playoff spot.

Section 3 —

  • With two games to go, South Park (11-0-1) is in the drivers seat, with the edge over second place Elizabeth Forward (10-1-1), as they took the series between the two schools in head-to-head matches, with one win and one draw.
  • McGuffey (6-6) can clinch fourth place and the last playoff spot with at least one more win, while Ligonier Valley (5-7) need to win out and some help.

Section 4 —

  • With two matches remaining, Charleroi (12-0-0) are in control of their destiny, with one more win or one more Mt. Pleasant (10-2) loss away from officially clinching the Section title.
  • It’s a big match on Thursday between Waynesburg Central (5-6-1)-Yough (4-6-2), as the winner will get a leg up on the 4th and final playoff spot out of this section.

 

Class 1A  – What’s At Stake

Section 1 —

  • Top four teams have all clinched playoff spots
  • Heading into Thursday’s final regular season matches for the teams in 2nd through 4th places (Sewickley Academy, Freedom and Eden Christian) — they all have identical 5-3-1 records.  It’s Beaver County Christian  (7-2) who are Section Champs.

Section 2 —

  • Bentworth (8-0) has easily secured the Section title with a dominant run through the regular season both in and out of section and have all but secured the No. overall seed for the WPIAL playoffs as they seek to win back-to-back district titles.
  • The last place spot will come down to two 1-6 teams (California and Chartiers-Houston), who both play on Thursday to wrap-up their regular season.

Section 3 —

  • OLSH (9-0) will take the Section title.
  • Aquinas Academy, Carlynton and Serra Catholic have already clinched playoff spots.

Section 4 —

  • Winchester Thurston (7-0-1) have the lead and can clinch the section title outright win a win at Springdale (7-2) on Thursday night.  If the Dynamo can pull out a win, that would put pressure on the Bears to win its section finale on Monday vs Trinity Christian.

He is also author of 'Miracle on the Mon' -- a book about the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, which chronicles the club, particularly the early years of Highmark Stadium with the narrative leading up to and centered around a remarkable match that helped provide a spark for the franchise. John has covered sports for Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, DK Pittsburgh Sports, Pittsburgh Sports Report, has served as color commentator on Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC broadcasts, and worked with OPTA Stats and broadcast teams for US Open Cup and International Champions Cup matches held in the US. Krysinsky also served as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at his alma mater, Point Park University, where he led the Pioneers to the first-ever winning seasons and playoff berths (1996-98); head coach of North Catholic boys (2007-08), associate head coach of Shady Side Academy boys (2009-2014).
