Match Day Notes

There are a few section matches left to be played this season around the WPIAL — as a few will happen on Monday.

Meanwhile, there’s still a host of other non-conference matches also on the schedule, as some teams look to finish the regular season strong while also getting good tests ahead of the WPIAL playoffs, which will see its brackets released on Wednesday.

  • On Sunday, we posted the latest standings and our playoff seeding projections.  We have confirmed with WPIAL officials that the Soccer Committee will be meeting on Wednesday morning, as they’ll plan to have the Brackets completed and ready to share with us by late morning/early afternoon.

WPIAL and City League Girls Soccer Standings and Playoff Seeding Projections (10/13/2024)

  • Here are Monday’s Key Matches — and what’s at stake for playoff berths…
    • Class 4A – all of the section matches have concluded but some of the non-conference contests should be good warm-up tests.  Allderdice, which can no longer compete for a spot in WPIAL playoffs, will be facing North Allegheny as they prepare for what appears to be a PIAA Play-In game in the coming weeks.
    • In Class 3A, Section 1, Shaler and Gateway (each with 2-6-1 records in section) will face off on Monday for what will essentially be a winner-take-all match.  Of course, if they end up tied, that could result both getting into the playoffs tied for fourth place
    • In Class 3A, Section 4, Indiana (3-6-2) has one match remaining, vs Kiski Area. With a win, they could move into a tie with Elizabeth Forward (4-6-2) for fourth and final playoff spot.
    • In Class 1A, Section 4, Greensburg Central Catholic still has a pair of matches (vs Springdale on Monday, and vs Apollo-Ridge on Tuesday) as they’re fighting with Ellis School for the fourth and final spot.  Ellis School has one more match remaining, vs Winchester Thurston on Monday.
  • Section titles are on the line too…
    • Class 2A, Section 2, Quaker Valley (8-1) faces Avonworth (4-5-0) with a share of the Section title on the line.  Beaver Area (8-1) will host Hopewell (1-6-2) .
    • Class 3A, Section 2, Moon (10-1) faces Montour (7-2-2) while West Allegheny (9-2) takes on Blackhawk (4-7). If Moon were to slip and West Allegheny wins their match, they could end up sharing the section title.
    • Class 1A, Section 3, Seton LaSalle (9-1-1) faces South Allegheny (1-9-1) with a chance to clinch at least a share of section title, while Sewickley Academy (8-1-1) has two matches remaining in the next two days, facing Bishop Canevin (4-7) on Monday, then Serra Catholic (1-9) on Wednesday.
    • Class 1A, Section 2, Bentworth (8-1) can clinch section title outright with a win vs California (3-5-1) on Monday.  If Bentworth were to slip, Waynesburg Central (8-2), who have completed their section schedule, would end in tie with Bentworth, though Bentworth did beat WC twice.
