On Friday, Steel City FC and the Riverhounds announced that its historic US Open Cup match has been moved to Highmark Stadium — still on March 17, at 7 p.m.
This seemed like a great opportunity to bring back and check in with Tom Ovenden and Dan Brower, Steel City FC’s owner/president and the men’s first team Head Coach, who came on Sounding Off on Soccer Podcast with John Krysinsky to discuss the match and the club’s efforts to partner with the Riverhounds in hosting the first Open Cup match in the proper tournament between two teams from the Pittsburgh area in 69 years.
In this episode, Tommo and Dan shared their insights and thoughts on the upcoming match and much more.
Among the topics discussed included:
- How moving the match from Rooney Field (originally scheduled before Steel City knew who they would be playing) to Highmark Stadium makes the most sense
- Working with the Riverhounds to come up with a mutual arrangement to benefit both sides
- What lessons did Steel City FC learn from its first appearance in US Open Cup in 2024
- Significance of this match for local, Pittsburgh soccer
- What sets the clubs apart and what makes Steel City FC unique
- Growth of Steel City’s men’s first team roster and importance of having more depth to sustain a year-round model
and much more!
