Instant Match Summary

In a match featuring two sides still shaking off the early-season rust, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds earned their first victory of the 2026 campaign, outlasting Loudoun United FC, 3-2, at Segra Field on Saturday afternoon.

Albert Dikwa spearheaded the Hounds’ attack with a goal and an assist, while Bradley Sample and Sam Bassett added second-half tallies to complete a comeback after a defensive lapse handed Loudoun an early lead. Although a 70th-minute strike from Loudoun’s Sean Young narrowed the margin, Pittsburgh remained composed to see out the win.

“I’m glad we got over the line, but again, I’m disappointed with the way we started,” said Head Coach Rob Vincent. “We settled into possession a little better than we did at Charleston, but the intensity wasn’t there. The goal we gave up was just really poor on our part; it kind of took that to wake us up and get us playing, which can’t be the way we do things. We have to play at a higher tempo earlier… but the most important thing is that we get the three points and hopefully learn something from it.”

The match’s intensity spiked in the 18th minute after Loudoun’s Pedro Santos was clipped by Hounds midfielder Charles Ahl. Shortly after, the Riverhounds fell behind due to a lapse in the back. Following a disjointed play where Victor Souza stepped up to block a Salvatore Mazzaferro shot, defender Guillaume Vacter lost track of Thor Úlfarsson. The dangerous Icelandic rookie—who frequently troubled Pitt as a senior at Duke—pounced on Vacter’s attempted clearance, deflecting the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.

Despite trailing after the 21st minute, Pittsburgh didn’t panic. The Hounds found the equalizer in the 26th minute when Perrin Barnes drove into the right side of the box. Salvatore Mezzaferro mistimed his challenge, running through the Hounds’ wingback and conceding a penalty. Albert Dikwa calmly stepped up, converting his first spot-kick of the season to level the match at 1-1.

The Hounds remained assertive to start the second half, capitalizing on a set piece to take the lead. Sam Bassett delivered a pinpoint corner to the “noggin” of Dikwa; the target forward redirected a header to Bradley Sample, who nodded it home for the 2-1 advantage.

While the first two goals were products of aggressive positioning, the third goal was the ultimate payoff for Vincent’s tactical philosophy. Initiated by a crisp, low, turf-burning pass from right center-back Beto Ydrach, Bassett moved forward into the attack. After a slick one-two sequence with Charles Ahl, Bassett made a quality run into the box, using clever footwork to beat two defenders before providing a nifty, left-footed finish.

Pittsburgh (1W-1L-0D, 3 points) will have a quick turnaround, as they’ll face Steel City FC in US Open Cup.
