Early deadlock dissolves as Louisville defeats Pitt 4-2

From University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department report

Pitt women’s soccer team dropped its Atlantic Coast Conference opener Saturday at Louisville, 4-2. Mya Archibald netted her first of the season for Pitt in the 20th minute of action to tie the game at one, but three second half goals from the Cardinals pushed them past the Panthers in the conference season debut.

Louisville (7-1, 1-0 ACC) took an early lead, capitalizing on a scramble inside the 18-yard box. A Cardinal throw in was sent into the box where a scramble ensued until the ball found the foot of Liza Suydam who sent a shot to the far post for the first score of the game.

Pitt (6-2-1, 0-1 ACC) responded 10 minutes later, working quickly in transition. Archibald dribbled up the right side and found herself without a defender in front of her. She sent a long shot to the top corner, beating the Louisville keeper to even the game at one in the 20th minute.

The match went into halftime at a 1-1 deadlock.

After the break, Louisville netted a quick goal in the 50th minute and extended the lead to 3-1 in the 63rd minute.

Pitt got one back in the 65th minute off an own goal from the Cardinals. Adi Bianchin got deep into the final third, sending the ball across the net looking for Sofia Doheny. The Louisville defender stepped in front of the cross and sent the ball past her own keeper into the net.

Louisville added another in the closing minutes of action to seal a 4-2 victory for the Cardinals.
