Pitt women’s soccer loses lead, falls to Virginia Tech, 2-1

Pitt women’s soccer team dropped its second ACC match Thursday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field, falling to Virginia Tech, 2-1.

Pitt (6-3-1, 0-2-0 ACC) controlled the first half, outshooting Virginia Tech (5-1-3, 1-0-0 ACC) 7-3, but the Hokies keeper made four saves to keep the match scoreless at the break.

The Panthers broke through in the 56th minute when Katie Ellermeyer found Sofia Doheny in behind the Virginia Tech back line for her third goal of the season.

Doheny got on the end of the pass one-on-one with the keeper and finished to put Pitt ahead 1-0.

It was two minutes later when the Hokies found the equalizer through Celine Kampmann. The Hokies earned a corner kick on the nearside, which Bella Ganiere took, sending a high-arching ball to the middle of the six-yard box. Kampmann met it with her head and finished past the diving Elli Johnson.

The game-winning goal came in the 77th minute with a strike from outside the 18-yard box from Riley Karpinski. The play was started by Hannah Pachan picking the ball off the Panthers and sending it forward to Eliana Salama, who squared it to Anna Weir. Weir continued the sequence with a pass to Karpinski, who cut around her defender and finished with a right-footed strike to the upper far corner.

Pitt finished with 14 shots and seven on target but could not find an equalizer in the final minutes. Elli Johnson made two saves on the night.
