ACC Women’s Soccer
FINAL: Pitt 1, NC State 0
From University of Pittsburgh Athletics Report
A second half goal from Raleigh native Desiree Reed lifted the Pitt women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory at NC State Thursday evening. The win marked the first in ACC play for the Panthers this season and evened the all-time series between the programs at six.
Elli Johnson posted her third solo shutout of the season with four saves on the night.
Pitt (7-5-2, 1-4-1 ACC) was offensive minded early, drawing three corners in the first 15 minutes of action. At the 22 minute mark, Sofia Doheny tried to head a cross from Lola Abraham into the net, but the shot lacked the power to make it past the Wolfpack keeper.
NC State (9-3-2, 2-3-1 ACC) seemed to have break the deadlock in the 27th minute, getting past the Pitt backline to send the ball into the back of the net.
However, after video review, the goal was ruled offsides and the 0-0 tie continued.
VAR was initiated again with eight minutes remaining as the referee signaled for a Wolfpack penalty kick with Sophie Rourke collided with a Wolfpack forward in the box. After review, the penalty was waved off. The teams entered the halftime break deadlocked at 0.
After the break, the Panthers were pressuring the Wolfpack backline once again. Pitt got two shots off in the first two minutes of the second stanza.
The Panthers finally broke the deadlock in the 67th minute.
Katie Ellermeyer played the ball down the left sideline to Mya Archibald. Archibald dribbled to the endline, sending the ball across the goal and finding Reed who finished.
Pitt closed out the win with a strong defensive stance and a handful of saves from Johnson.
