Instant Match Summary
The Riverhounds (2-2-0) secured their first home win of the 2026 season on Banner Night, but it wasn’t without a late-match heart-rate spike.
After cruising to a 3-0 lead, the Hounds had to weather a ferocious Jacksonville comeback attempt to ensure the 2025 Championship banner wasn’t spoiled by an expansion-side equalizer.
“I think obviously we made it a lot more difficult than it needed to be… I think 60 minutes [were] good, you know, got ourselves into a great position and then made it more difficult than it needed to be,” Rob Vincent, Riverhounds Head Coach, said.
On a night that began with the emotional high of raising the 2025 Championship banner, the Hounds displayed the clinical “Standard” in the first half, only to be reminded of their current defensive fragility in the second. Albert Dikwa’s brace and Sam Bassett’s world-class strike provided enough cushion, but the second-half brace from Jacksonville’s Emil Jääskeläinen served as a sobering reminder that this 2026 squad is still a work in progress.
“Once they get any type of glimmer of hope, they’re going to come roaring back,” Vincent said of Jacksonville’s second half surge.
“Something we got to stop is those entries into the box and try and get more first contacts. But yeah, thankfully we got over the line.”
The Good: The Hounds were incredibly efficient, scoring three goals on four shots on target. Dikwa reaching the 40-goal milestone in a Hounds jersey cements his legacy on a night already filled with club history.
The Concerning: For the fourth consecutive league match, the Hounds failed to keep a clean sheet, conceding twice in quick succession. The 61% possession allowed to Jacksonville will surely be a talking point for Rob Vincent in the morning.
Up Next: The Hounds have no time to dwell. They remain at Highmark this Tuesday, March 31, to host Virginia Dream FC in the U.S. Open Cup Second Round.
Second Half Highlights
-
49′ — DIKWA DOES IT AGAIN: The Hounds started the half with a bang after a handball in the box. Albert Dikwa stepped up and buried the penalty low and right for his 40th career goal as a Riverhound. At 3-0, Highmark was rocking.
-
58′ – 62′ — THE JAX SURGE: The Hounds conceded twice in a four-minute span, turning a stroll into a survival mission.
Sporting fought back, getting on the board in the 58th minute from a corner kick. Jordan Rossiter shot from the top of the box through traffic, and the ball deflected off Traore in front, sending the opposite direction of diving goalkeeper Nico Campuzano and softly into the net.Four minutes later, Jacksonville struck again. Neville thumped a ball forward from just inside the halfway line, and Jääskeläinen won the battle to get to the bouncing ball and struck a low finish to his left. -
The Final Stand: Rob Vincent turned to his bench in the 63rd minute, bringing on Robbie Mertz and Eliot Goldthorp to regain control. The final ten minutes were all Jacksonville as the visitors dominated the ball, but the Hounds’ defensive block—criticized earlier in the week—held firm under immense pressure.

HALFTIME REPORT
If Rob Vincent was looking for a clinical response to a week of “internal frustration,” he got it in the first 45 minutes at Highmark Stadium. On a night dedicated to the 2025 title, the 2026 Riverhounds have played like a team determined to set a new standard, heading into the locker room with a commanding 2-0 lead over Sporting Club Jacksonville.
The Sniper and the Specialist
The Hounds wasted no time igniting the home crowd. In the 7th minute, the reigning Golden Boot winner made his presence felt. Albert Dikwa pounced on a long ball over the top from Bradley Sample, showcasing elite footwork to navigate space 14 yards out before clinically driving the opening goal into the back right corner.
While Dikwa provided the power, Sam Bassett provided the artistry in the 28th minute.
The 22-year-old midfielder doubled the lead with a moment of pure quality, moving into the attacking third and unleashing a bending strike to his right that tucked perfectly into the upper left corner, leaving Jax keeper Christian Olivares with no chance.
Tactical Shift: Structure Over Possession
Despite holding a two-goal lead, the Hounds have been content to let Jacksonville dictate the ball. Jax has held 59% possession, but the Hounds’ defensive shape has been a revelation compared to the “lethargy” seen midweek.
-
The 5-4-1 Wall: By the 42nd minute, Pittsburgh settled into a tightly structured 5-4-1 defensive block that has suffocated the visitors.
-
The Save of the Half: Jacksonville’s best chance came in the 33rd minute on a redirected header that seemed destined for the back of the net. However, Beto Ydrach —proving his value on both ends of the pitch—was positioned perfectly to head the ball off the line and off the crossbar to preserve the clean sheet.

1st Half
HALFTIME WHISTLE BLOWS! PITTSBURGH 2, SPORTING JAX 0
Hounds made most of chances — converting on both shots on frame as they hold edge. Seem more willing to let Jax have ball (59% of it in fact) and defending shape has been solid — limiting the visitors to 2 shots (one on target)
42′ — Hounds defending structure looks better — as they looking more light a tightly structured 5-4-1.
41′ — Attempt missed. Emil Jääskeläinen (Sporting JAX) header from the centre of the box following a set piece.
33′ — Save off the line! Jax with its best chance. Redirected header sails under bar but Bradley Sample is there to head it away from danger as ball bounces off bar, then cleared away.
28′ — GOAL!! PITTSBURGH 2, JAX 0
Sam Bassett shows his quality! It’s a beauty https://bsky.app/profile/njemurray.bsky.social/post/3mi5skke2uk2fas the 22 year-old moves into the attacking third, then unleashes a bending ball while moving to his right — sending it into the upper left side corner to beat Jax keeper Christian Olivares
Absolutely thumped home into the top-left corner from distance by the new Hounds midfielder. #USL-C #HOUNDTAHN

Albert Dikwa
Albert the sniper is officially back — as Hounds’ target forward finds loose ball at his feet after long ball over the top in from Bradley Sample. After some clever footwork to navigate to find a spot about 14 yards out — drives it into back right side of net.
Albert Dikwa back on the scoresheet at Highmark, capping off the kind of direct move Pittsburgh hung their hat on during last year's title run.
7:06 — After brief banner unavailing — they’ve kicked off on time!
6:15 PM – Lineups Are In
Carry over from last Saturday’s lineup in last league match and Wednesday’s Open Cup tilt, Rob Vincent has made a few changes to the lineup, with the most glaring being Owen Mikoy on the backline getting his first league start and second consecutive nod in the XI. Gui Vacter is not in the 18 — though he wasn’t listed in the injury report.

Three Things to Watch Tonight
-
The 91-Second Threat: Jacksonville’s Kieran Sadlier has already scored the fastest goal in the USL this season. If the Hounds’ defense—which has conceded 7 goals in 3 league games—isn’t awake from the whistle, the banner party could be spoiled early.
-
The Midfield Pivot: Watch how Bradley Sample and Sam Bassett interact with Danny Griffin. Vincent was unhappy with the lack of “intensity” midweek; expect a much higher, more aggressive press tonight to rattle Jax’s possession-heavy style.
-
The Fresh Legs Rotation: With Max Viera and Robbie Mertz on the bench, Vincent has high-impact options to change the game’s tempo in the second half.
