FINAL: Phoenix Rising 1, Pittsburgh 0
Riverhounds SC’s fortress at FNB Stadium finally buckled on Saturday night.
Despite a disciplined defensive effort in an evenly played match with both sides never really able to get their grip and dictate terms, a 63rd minute strike from Phoenix Rising FC’s Ihsan Sacko handed the Hounds their first home loss of the 2026 campaign, dropping their season record to 3W-4L-1D.
“We probably hade to do a little better job of just kind of competing and fighting,” Rob Vincent, Riverhounds Head Coach, said.
“We didn’t look as sharp and intense tonight.”
“The way we started the game, obviously, both teams were high energy, buzzing around, no one had clear control,” Danny Griffin, Riverhounds midfielder and captain, said, then added that one lapse by the Hounds to clear and a solid individual effort by Sacko was the difference in the match.
“I think we had two guys, and someone tried to clear it, and kind of either cleared off with him or cleared off of our other seven back. Just obviously a favorable bounce for him.”
The Hounds and Phoenix ended the match pretty even in most statistical categories, but Phoenix generated the only quality ‘big’ chance of the match.
“We’re kind of sitting there midway through the second half, thinking it’s probably going to be a nil-nil or a mistake,” Vincent added.
“And then we make a mistake. So frustrating, disappointing to lose at home for sure.”
Immediate Takeaways
-
The Breakthrough: After a first half where the Hounds mostly neutralized a big and fast Phoenix squad, the visitors finally found a an opening after a quick transition along the left side of the attack, taking advantage of a Pittsburgh defensive lapse in a failure to clear the ball in the 63rd mintue, as the Rising’s most dangerous attacker, Ihsan Sacko, scored the lone goal of the match.
Tight Margins and Costly Mistakes
Assistant Coach Rob Vincent described the contest as an “even game that’s kind of decided on one moment.” While the Hounds limited Phoenix’s clear-cut chances for much of the night, a defensive mistake in the second half allowed the visitors their decisive shot on target.
Intensity Gap
Vincent noted that the Hounds “didn’t look as sharp and as intense” compared to previous home outings. While the Hounds’ transition game showed flashes in the first half through Danny Griffin and Eliot Goldthorp getting shots on target, the team struggled to find a clinical edge in the attacking third as the match progressed and would fail to challenge Phoenix goalkeeper again.
Neutralizing the Build-up
Despite Phoenix having a significant number of touches in the box and comfort playing out of the back, the Hounds’ shape largely kept the visitors from breaking them down until defensive lapse.
The Missed Response
A few moments after Phoenix took the lead, the Hounds had its best opportunity to equalize through Albert Dikwa but the chance which came through with a cross from the right side, right on a platter for the Hounds’ leading scorer, but this time, he couldn’t react quick enough to redirect a quality shot attempt.

1st Half Observations
Riverhounds and Phoenix Rising FC headed into the break level at 0-0 following a physical opening 45 minutes defined by Phoenix’s high pressure and Pittsburgh’s opportunistic transition play.
-
The Transition Spark: While Phoenix dominated the ball and managed 11 touches in the Hounds’ box, they failed to register a shot on target. In contrast, the Hounds have been clinical in transition. Danny Griffin tested Patrick Rakovsky early with a low drive in the 6th minute, and Eliot Goldthorp nearly broke the deadlock in the 28th minute with a deflected right-footed effort from outside the box that required a central save from the Phoenix keeper.
-
Physicality on the South Shore: The half was punctuated by heavy collisions. Albert Dikwa has been the focal point of the Phoenix defense, drawing significant physical attention and going down twice after hard challenges, including a 33rd-minute aerial collision with Moursou.
-
Defensive Resilience: Set up in a 4-2-2-2 (flex into 4-2-3-1), the Hounds’ defensive shape has been regularly tested but remains unbroken. Despite Phoenix being on the “front foot” early, the Pittsburgh backline has consistently turned away a big, fast, and physical Rising squad.
