Post Match Reaction: Rob Vincent and Riverhounds embrace gritty path to victory at Louisville

For years, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds have found a way to become a thorn in the side of Louisville City FC at Lynn Family Stadium.

On Saturday night, they didn’t just provide a thorn; they dipped back into the archives for a throwback performance emblematic of the Bob Lilley era marked by opportunistic goals and defensive resilience.

Despite facing a relentless barrage from a frustrated Louisville attack, the Hounds walked away with a 2-0 victory, marking their first road clean sheet of the 2026 league campaign and solidifying their status as the only USL Championship team with a winning record in Louisville.

The Early Strike and the Defensive Block

The Hounds wasted no time asserting themselves. In the 8th minute, a perfectly placed set piece from Robbie Mertz found Trevor Amann, who bundled it home to give Pittsburgh a lightning-fast 1-0 lead.

For Head Coach Rob Vincent, getting that early advantage changed the entire complexion of the match.

“We put a lot of emphasis on set pieces, not just this week, but all season,” Vincent said.

“You know going to a place like Louisville, that’s probably going to be one of the best ways to create chances, and tonight we got an early goal from the free kick. It gives you something to hang on to and gives the guys a lot of confidence.

“

However, that confidence was tested immediately. Louisville controlled 64% of the possession in the first half, pinning the Hounds back. It took a fantastic performance from goalkeeper Nico Campuzano—who finished with five saves in the first half alone—to keep the lead intact.

Tactical Maturity: Shifting the Shape

After Sam Bassett doubled the lead early in the second half with a clinical strike down the middle, Vincent showcased his tactical growth.

Recognizing that Louisville was finding success out wide but struggling to penetrate the center, he brought on veterans Junior Etou and Illal Osumanu to solidify a defensive block.

“We talked at halftime about being comfortable in our block,” Vincent explained.

“They hurt us more in the first half when we pressed and they played through it.

Once we felt [crosses] were their main plan of attack, I think we were happy to let them continue to cross it and defend our box.”

Vincent also praised the veteran presence of Junior Etou and Illal Osumanu which allowed the Hounds to navigate a physical final 30 minutes that saw Louisville shown two yellow cards as their frustrations boiled over.

The elusive Clean Sheet

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect for the first-year Head Coach was seeing a zero the scoreboard for the opposition. After several weeks of playing well but conceding soft goals, the Hounds’ backline—led by the heroic efforts of Campuzano—finally held firm for the full 90.

“I think there have been a handful of games we’ve defended really well and didn’t really deserve to give up a goal, but then one would get past us,” Vincent noted.

“Nico (Campuzano) came up big today with a lot of good saves, and guys were stepping up to block shots… I’m just really happy for the guys to get that clean sheet.”

The Road Warrior Mentality

The win pushes the Hounds to a 6-4-3 all-time record in Louisville, a remarkable stat given the dominance LouCity typically enjoys at home. While the Hounds were outshot and out-possessed, the result is all that matters as they stay in the hunt for a top-four seed in the Eastern Conference.

This was an important road win that will certainly help the Hounds as they progress through the season with confidence in road matches.  Prior to this match, Pittsburgh was 1W-3L-1D on the road this season, with a minus-4 goal differential.

“It’s hard to win on the road in USL, and today we had to win ugly,” Vincent admitted.

“We hope to win some where we’re on the ball more and we’re a little more in control, but whether it’s one point or three, getting results on the road is always good.”

The Hounds now turn their attention to the USL Cup on May 15th against Charlotte Independence, carrying with them the momentum of a statement win in one of the league’s toughest environments.
