Reigning Division Champ Riveters travel to Steel City FC for heavyweight W League clash

If Wednesday night’s men’s derby on the South Side wasn’t enough to satisfy your craving for high-stakes local soccer, buckle up.

On Thursday evening, the focus shifts to Indiana Township as the Pittsburgh Riveters travel to Founders Field to clash with Steel City FC in a massive early-season showdown in the USL W League’s Great Forest Division.

For the Riveters, this match represents another step in defending their crown. For Steel City FC, Thursday night offers a golden opportunity to defend their home turf, make a massive statement in the divisional standings, and avenge the razor-thin heartbreaks of last summer.

During the inaugural 2025 campaign, this cross-town rivalry was as tight as it gets.

The Riveters managed to take both matches via narrow 2-1 and 3-1 results, utilizing late-game heroics—including a dramatic regular-season finale winner by Gina Proviano—to secure the division title over a relentless Steel City squad.

Adding to the tactical intrigue on Thursday, this matchup marks the Riveters’ only anticipated regular-season game on a natural grass surface this summer, giving Steel City a traditional, distinct home-field advantage at Founders Field.

Riveters Ride High on Unbeaten Resilience

The reigning champion Riveters enter the match sitting at 1-0-1 (4 points) on the young season. While they opened the summer with a dominant 5-0 clean sheet over Buffalo, they are coming off a wild, emotional 3-3 roller coaster against Flower City 1872 last Friday.

Head coach Scott Gibson will undoubtedly be looking for a much tighter, more disciplined defensive performance after conceding three goals at home. However, the squad’s relentless “fight to the end” spirit is at an all-time high after starting goalkeeper Bailey Herfurth left her net empty in stoppage time to score a miraculous, game-saving equalizer on a corner kick. It was a viral sequence that proved the Riveters are never truly out of a match.

Speaking with Pittsburgh Soccer Now’s Kevin Hutchinson ahead of the match, Gibson noted that managing the rapid assembly of a pre-professional summer roster remains the primary challenge in the early weeks of the season.

“Year one, it’s the inaugural year. Everything’s new, everything’s fresh,” head coach Scott Gibson said.

“Maybe there’s not as much pressure as people think — although there was pressure on us last year to do well. There always is at this club. I mean, to play for the organization, that comes with it; you want to be on top. We’ve got a lot of players that are coming in, ready to get started. Hopefully they’ll settle in. It’s a big thing, right? They’re moving into a new city, a new environment and a new club. So that’s the hardest thing in this league; making sure they settle quickly because it’s a short season.”

Steel City Leans on Defensive Solidity

Across the pitch, Steel City FC (1-0-0, 3 points) represents a completely contrasting early-season narrative.

While the Riveters have leaned into high-scoring, chaotic thrillers, Steel City has preached absolute discipline.

The club opened its campaign last Friday by grinding out a massive, highly organized 1-0 clean-sheet victory on the road against FC Buffalo.

Boasting a deeply connected, continuous roster from last summer, Steel City’s backline is incredibly tough to break down in open play. Led by returning local standouts like Duquesne’s Maya Matesa and opening-day goal-scorer Marissa Salisbury, Steel City is primed to clog passing lanes, frustrate the Riveters’ attack, and use their veteran chemistry to leapfrog their rivals in the standings.

That elite internal standard is something veteran leaders Emily Graeca and Payton O’Malley emphasized on last week’s Sounding Off on Soccer podcast ahead of the summer kickoff. For this group, the intensifying regional competition doesn’t shake their foundational belief in what they’ve built.

“Yes, I can say there’s a rise in competition level, for sure. But nothing really changes for us,” Payton O’Malley noted regarding the match up and the league’s growth. “It has been the same competition in practices and things like that before we even made the switch, so, I mean, to say that we have already brought a great level, like, me and Graeca can’t be more proud that we were already at such a high level.”

O’Malley will miss this match, as she’s participating in the TST event in North Carolina.  Ruby Morgan (Trinity HS / Eastern Kentucky) filled in to get the clean sheet in the opener for Steel City FC.

Houses Divided

Beyond the tactics, the match features the ultimate local bragging-rights storylines when you look across both rosters — with numerous current college and former High School/club teammates — it will be a true house divided.

Maybe most glaring one is when it comes across the bloodlines.  Thursday’s derby will showcase a spectacular sibling rivalry as sisters Robin Reilly (suiting up for the Riveters) and Regan Reilly (anchoring the midfield for Steel City FC) go head-to-head on the pitch. It is a perfect micro-narrative that highlights the immense depth of local WPIAL talent choosing to stay home, train in elite environments, and compete in Western Pennsylvania over the summer months.

Tactical Battles and a House Divided

The tactical battle will likely come down to set-piece execution versus low-block discipline. The Riveters have been lethal on restarts early in the year, scoring four of their eight total goals directly from set pieces. If Steel City can remain organized under heavy corner-kick and free-kick pressure, they can limit Pittsburgh’s primary source of offense.

Adding to the tactical intrigue, Thursday’s match marks the Riveters’ only regular-season game on a natural grass surface this summer, throwing a traditional, physical dynamic into the mix at Founders Field. Gibson noted that the shift in playing surface alters how the game must be approached.

“Playing on grass is always different for our group, especially when we spend so much time training on turf,” Gibson told PSN. “It slows the ball down a bit and changes the physical demands of the match. Steel City knows their pitch well, and they know how to make it difficult for visiting teams. We have to adapt quickly to the surface if we want to establish our tempo.”

Final Thoughts

With the Great Forest Division shaping up to be a multi-team sprint to the finish line, dropping points early can be fatal to playoff aspirations. Expect a physical, fast-paced, and emotionally charged ninety minutes at Founders Field.
