Pittsburgh Soccer Weekend Rundown: Riveters rolling, Steel City awards day sweep and Beadling picks up win

What a weekend for Pittsburgh soccer. From statement-making road triumphs to gut-wrenching penalty shootouts and much-needed bounce-back victories on home soil, the local landscape shifted dramatically over the last 48 hours.

Here is your complete guide to all the weekend scores, highlights, and shifting dynamics across the region:

Riverhounds Cup Heartbreak: 0-0 Draw (Battery win on PKs)

The Headline: The Pittsburgh Riverhounds first team played the Charleston Battery to a scoreless gridlock through regulation at Patriot’s Point, but once again suffered heartbreak in the penalty shootout. By failing to secure the bonus point in the USL Cup competition, the Hounds face a steep uphill battle to get into knockout round.

Shootout deja vu plagues Hounds as Cup ambitions slip away in Charleston

With this result, it becomes nearly impossible for the club to advance into the knockout stages of the tournament in this, their second year of USL Cup play.

They’ll have a chance to regroup quickly on the league front this coming Saturday when they return home to F.N.B. Stadium to host Indy Eleven — in Eric Dick’s first match in Pittsburgh since helping the Hounds win the USL C title last November.

Pittsburgh Riveters SC 4, Flower City 1872 0

The Headline: The Riveters (4-0-1) are firmly in the driver’s seat of the Great Forest Division after executing a resounding 4-0 dismantling of previously unbeaten Flower City 1872 at the Rochester Community Sports Complex.

The statement win puts Pittsburgh two points clear at the top of the table with a critical match in hand. Lexi Grundler made one save to secure her second consecutive clean sheet—the team’s third in a row—capping off a dominant three-match road trip where they outscored opponents by a cumulative 9-0 margin.

How It Happened:

  • The Early Strike (9′): Flower City tested Grundler early, but the Riveters struck first. Irish international Ellen Molloy found space at the top of the box and slipped a perfectly weighted pass to Kennedy Neighbors, who smoothly slotted it home for her first goal of the year.

  • Turning on the Attack (53′): Making her first start of 2026, Sabrina Bryan doubled the lead out of the half. Feeding off a Tanum Nelson pass, Bryan danced around a pair of defenders with elite footwork before firing a left-footed strike home.

  • Nelson Doubles Down (64′): Returning to the very field where she scored the first-ever Riveters goal in 2025, Tanum Nelson worked a gorgeous give-and-go with Neighbors before placing a low, clinical shot inside the left post.

  • The Ex-Factor (87′): Former Flower City player Emily Hanrahan finished the scoring late, rising high to meet a Fiona Mahan corner kick and heading it off the crossbar and over the line.

Neighbors was the club’s Player of the Match, logging all 90 minutes, dictating the middle of the pitch, scoring the match-opener, and providing a pinpoint assist on Nelson’s tally.

Steel City FC (Men) 3, FC Buffalo 0

The Headline: Shrugging off a severe weather delay, the defending USL League Two Great Forest Division champions kept their unbeaten record pristine with an emphatic 3-0 shutout victory over FC Buffalo on Club Awards Day at Founders Field.

Early flurry powers Steel City FC past FC Buffalo, 3-0

A lightning-fast start saw Steel City find the back of the net twice in the opening 12 minutes through Johan Nissen-Lie and Sava Catlett. The highlight of the match belonged to current Duquesne standout Jaxon Ervin, who electrified the home crowd in the 31st minute by breaking through a defensive scrum to hit an upper-90 rocket into the top corner. Head Coach Dan Brower praised the team’s tactical execution, particularly on set pieces, as the men firmly preserve their position at the top of the table ahead of Wednesday’s massive home Derby rematch against Riverhounds Two.

🪵 Steel City FC (Women) 1, FC Buffalo 0

The Headline: Capping off the afternoon Awards Day doubleheader at Founders Field, the Steel City women picked up a massive, much-needed victory to move their early-season campaign to 2W-3L-0.

In a highly defensive, physical clash against a resilient FC Buffalo side, the definitive breakthrough came from the penalty spot.

Abigail Stager stepped up under immense pressure and confidently converted the spot-kick, anchoring a gritty defensive stand that secured a vital 1-0 clean sheet.

🐗 Lorain County 3, Riverhounds Two 2

The Headline: The young Hounds Two squad dropped critical points on the road over the weekend, suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat at the hands of Lorain County.

Despite executing stretches of high-tempo possession and fighting back with two goals of their own, defensive lapses in transition allowed the hosts to snatch the victory. Hounds Two will have to regroup mentally and physically with zero delay, as they prepare to visit Founders Field this Wednesday night for a highly anticipated, high-stakes local Derby rematch with Steel City FC.

🐝 Beadling SC (WPSL) 2, Niagara 1812 1

The Headline: Western Pennsylvania’s premier WPSL representative took home its first victory of the 2026 summer season, splitting their grueling New York road trip weekend with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Niagara 1812. Beadling’s attack came alive courtesy of clinical finishes from Merritt Delk and Adrienne Altizer. The victory injects massive momentum into the squad as they begin maneuvering through a highly competitive WPSL East Region landscape.
