A match shifted to the artificial turf at AHN Montour Soccer Complex due to wet conditions at the North Athletic Complex provided plenty of high-stakes drama on opening day. But for Jonathan Potter’s Robert Morris Colonials, the 2026 campaign began with late heartbreak.

Drexel’s Brian Salvino turned out to be the ultimate difference-maker, striking in the 88th minute to lift the visiting Dragons to a 2-1 victory over RMU on Thursday afternoon.

The defeat spoils an afternoon that saw a heavy influx of new faces step onto the pitch for RMU, alongside a heroic second-half penalty save from senior captain goalkeeper Josh Lane that nearly preserved a point.

Tactical Battle & Early Penalty Exchanges

Drexel asserted high-pressing control early on, forcing the tempo through the midfield and testing RMU’s shape. The Dragons dictated space across the opening 30 minutes, churning out four shots and three corner kicks without breaking down RMU’s low block.

The lead proved short-lived. Drexel responded with urgency, drawing its own penalty just eight minutes later. Victor Moerck converted the spot kick in the 40th minute to level the match at 1-1. Drexel mounted a flurry of set-piece opportunities before the break—earning four corner kicks over the final five minutes of the half—but RMU’s backline held firm through the pressure.

Lane’s Heroics Undone by Late Salvino Winner

Physicality escalated in the second half as both sides fought to control transition moments. The sequence of the match unfolded past the hour mark when Lane was whistled for a foul inside the 18-yard box, presenting Drexel with a golden opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot.

Lane immediately redeemed himself, diving across the goal line to parry the penalty attempt away and keep the scoreline level at 1-1.

However, the Dragons’ relentless set-piece edge and vertical pressure eventually broke through. Just moments after receiving a yellow card in the 86th minute, Drexel’s Brian Salvino latched onto a setup from Mo Diallo and Raphael Bartell. Salvino slotted home the game-winner in the 88th minute, leaving RMU with little time to mount an equalizer.
