West Coast Bounce Back: Pitt WSOC controls midfield, edges LMU 2-1

The Pitt Panthers kicked off their California road swing on a high note Thursday evening, grinding out a 2-1 victory over Loyola Marymount at Sullivan Field.

With the win, Ben Waldrum’s side rebounds from Sunday’s bump against Texas, improving to 2-1-0 on the young season while extending their streak of outshooting every opponent faced in 2026.

How It Happened

First Half

Pitt set a relentless pressing tempo from the opening whistle, pinning LMU deep into their own defensive third. Pushing high through wide channels, the Panthers earned their first corner within three minutes and recorded their opening shot by the sixth minute.

The sustained territorial control paid off in the 13th minute through a second-phase set-piece routine following an initial LMU clearance off a Pitt corner, Katie Ellermeyer collected the recycling ball outside the 18-yard box. Then, Ellermeyer cleanly played the ball back into dangerous space for Adi Bianchin, who laid a crisp pass off to Celine Ottah. The SMU transfer unleashed a powerful strike past the LMU keeper, opening her Panther goal-scoring account and giving Pitt a deserved 1-0 lead.

Pitt’s central pivot effectively choked out LMU’s build-up play throughout the opening 45 minutes.

The Panthers completely neutralized the Lions in transition, taking a 10-0 shot advantage into the halftime locker room.

Second Half

The match turned significantly more physical in the second half, with LMU raising their line of confrontation and Pitt picking up two cautions as the match broke down into central duels.

Despite the heightened physical friction, Pitt continued to orchestrate dangerous looks in transition. Freshman Desiree Reed nearly doubled the margin in the 54th minute, driving through space before rattling a strike just over the crossbar.

The insurance goal arrived in the 73rd minute via aggressive box entry — as Sage Stelzer made a darting blind-side run into the 18-yard box, drawing a reckless challenge from an LMU defender to earn a clear penalty.

Lola Abraham stepped to the dot with complete composure, burying her second goal of the campaign into the net for a 2-0 cushion.

In the final ten minutes, a series of defensive-third fouls disrupted Pitt’s rhythm, allowing LMU to stack numbers forward.

The Lions capitalized on an 89th-minute set piece just outside the 18, curling a direct free kick home to break the clean sheet.

However, the Panthers locked down the remaining stoppage time to close out the 2-1 road victory.
