Central Catholic, RMU Grad Alfery Signs With Riverhounds

AlferyThe Pittsburgh Riverhounds have added a homegrown product to their 2016 roster —  goalkeeper Brenden Alfery.
Cheswick native Alfery has been training with the Hounds since the preseason started, and the team today made it official — as he signed his first professional contract with the with his hometown pro team.
While growing up in the Pittsburgh area, Alfery played for Century United and at Central Catholic High School.  He moved on to play at NCAA Division III Grove City College before finishing his college career at Robert Morris University.
Alfery started all 37 games for the Colonials during his time in Moon Township and the past two summers he played for the National Premier Soccer League’s Fort Pitt Regiment.   Alfery is the third goalkeeper added to the mix — as the Riverhounds brought back veteran goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap and added Costa Rican stopper Mauricio Vargas to compete for the starting slot between the posts.
Alfery joins Nick Kolarac as the only other Pittsburgh-area native on the Riverhounds roster.
 
 
 

John Krysinsky has covered soccer and other sports for many years for various publications and media outlets. He is also author of 'Miracle on the Mon' -- a book about the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, which chronicles the club, particularly the early years of Highmark Stadium with the narrative leading up to and centered around a remarkable match that helped provide a spark for the franchise. John has covered sports for Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, DK Pittsburgh Sports, Pittsburgh Sports Report, has served as color commentator on Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC broadcasts, and worked with OPTA Stats and broadcast teams for US Open Cup and International Champions Cup matches held in the US. Krysinsky also served as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at his alma mater, Point Park University, where he led the Pioneers to the first-ever winning seasons and playoff berths (1996-98); head coach of North Catholic boys (2007-08), associate head coach of Shady Side Academy boys (2009-2014).
